About

Prof. Dr. med. Martin Engelhardt specializes in orthopaedics and sports traumatology, and is the chief physician of the Department of Orthopaedics, Trauma and Hand Surgery at Osnabrück Clinic. Prof. Engelhardt’s team treats injuries and disesase of the musculoskeletal system, and performs inpatient and outpatient procedures in the context of both emergency and standard care.

In his position as chief physician (since 2008), Prof. Engelhardt and his team have established an excellent medical reputation for the clinic: a study found that Prof. Engelhardt and his team were recommended especially often by both colleagues and patients.

The procedures performed by the team are predominantly performed in a minimally invasive fashion, so that the risks and complications for patients may be minimised. The specialists are dedicated to assisting their patients in a rapid recovery. The number of artificial knee and hip joint procedures in Germany is continuously rising. Among other factors, this is due to either a lack of sport, which leads to improper stress on the joints, or an excess of sport, which increases damage caused by wear.

The increasing number of patients highlights the need for continuous development of the techniques and methods of artificial joints, so that patients may be provided with the best-possible long-term relief. Patient satisfaction and the frequent recommendations from his peers show that Prof. Engelhardt and his team are more than equal to this challenge.

Prof. Engelhardt himself actively participates in triathlons, and is the President of the German Triathlon Union (Deutschen Triathlon-Union, DTU). Throughout the whole of his professional career, he has studied intensively topics in sports science and sports medicine, and has earned an excellent name for himself in the area of sports medicine as well as in orthopaedics. For example, Prof. Engelhardt was the leading orthopaedist on the German Olympic team, and has a seat on the Medical Expert Committee of the German Olympic Sports Association (DOSB), as well as the German Society for Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC). Prof. Engelhardt is a visiting professor of the medical faculty at the University of Munster. Since 2014, he has also been lecturing as an honorary professor at the Institute of Sports and Exercise Science at Osnabrück University.

In additional to his medical practice, Prof. Engelhardt is involved with a number of renowned medical socieities for sports traumatology and orthpaedics. Until 2004, he was the President of GOTS (Society of Orthopaedic-Traumatological Sports Medicine). He has also edited many specialist journal articles and books. Dr. Martin Engelhardt is one of German’s leading knee surgeons.
