Prof. Victor Valderrabano is a specialist in orthopaedics and traumatology and in foot and ankle, arthritis and sports surgery. Since January 2015, the nationally and internationally renowned medical practitioner and scientist has led the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of the Pain Clinic, Basel, a clinic of the Genolier Swiss Medical Network (GSMN) private clinic chain. Here, Prof. Valderrabano provides the complete range of orthopaedic and traumatology treatment, including conservative and surgical treatments to university standards.
Together with high-end medical care, the particular model is personal, open and confident dealings with patients. Prof. Valderrabano is one of the outstanding medical practitioners in the field of orthopaedics and traumatology. Since 1996, he has been involved in a large amount of research work in the field of biomechanics, arthritis, cartilage and ligament injuries, as well as muscular rehabilitation. Together with numerous awards for outstanding scientific achievements, he is also actively involved in the training and continuous education of young doctors and colleagues. In 2009, then, he was named Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the University Hospital, Basel.
Particular areas of interest of Prof. Valderrabano are human biomechanics and sports injuries. Hence, in 2003, he was also trained in sports medicine and was awarded his second doctorate (Dr. phil.) in the field of biomechanics at the University of Calgary (Canada). Since 2012, he has been the President of the Society for Orthopaedic Traumatologic Sports Medicine, the second largest coalition of leading sports physicians in the field of orthopaedics and traumatology worldwide.
Together with orthopaedics and traumatology of the entire musculoskeletal system, Prof. Valderrabano’s special field of interest is surgery for arthritis. Here, two techniques are available: joint-preserving treatment and joint replacement. Thanks to his long-standing medical experience and consistent further training, Prof. Valderrabano is able to perform both variants skilfully and safely. WIth joint-preserving surgery, Prof. Valderrabano can reconstruct or transplant your damaged cartilage minimally invasively using the most up to date technique. In addition, the mechanical axis and hence the load on the cartilage surfaces can also be corrected by an osteotomy. If the cartilage is extensively badly worn, the joint must generally be replaced by a prosthesis (artificial joint replacement). Here, too, Prof. Valderrabano can help your immobility in the affected joint, with a complete or a partial prosthesis, and hence, restore your quality of life.
Another special area of Prof. Valderrabano is foot and ankle surgery. Here, the treatment range extends from ligament reconstruction, bony fracture stabilisation, surgical correction of malalignments, surgery for arthritis of the ankle (osteotomy, prosthetics) up to the treatment of forefoot deformities (hallux) and diabetic foot.
Sportsmen, in particular, place high demands on their musculoskeletal system. Over the course of his career, Prof. Valderrabano has successfully treated many prestigious sportsmen for sports injuries. In particular, this includes the treatment of injuries to the foot / ankle, such as ruptured ligaments, cartilage lesions and knee injuries such as ruptured cruciate ligaments, meniscus lesions and ruptured ligaments. As well, inflammations, joint luxations and fractures can also occur in sporting accidents. Here, as for each of his treatments, Prof. Valderrabano places particular value on the optimum restoration of your bones, ligaments and joints and on your well-being.
Conservative treatment is just as important to Prof. Valderrabano as good surgical treatment. Here, this concerns the restoration of the natural and pain-free sequence of movements of the joints by physiotherapy, medications, splints (ortheses) or orthotics.
