About PD Dr Christian Weissenberger

PD Dr. Weissenberger is a specialist radiotherapist as well as a radio-oncologist and founded the ultramodern Radiotherapy Centre in Freiburg in autumn 2012. Together with his team, consisting of specialists and medical physicists, he provides the complete range of radiotherapy and radio-oncology at highest standard.

When the practice was re-built, Dr. Weissenberger placed emphasis on facilities with the latest medical technology. As a place of healing for the most serious of conditions, the Radiotherapy Centre should also not miss out on having a comfortable atmosphere. In his practice, Dr. Weissenberger combines his specialist expertise with outstanding people skills and empathy. Regardless of the condition you are suffering, here you are really able to feel that you are in good hands and are well cared for.

In order to reinforce your confidence in the treatment, Dr. Weissenberger will calmly explain the therapeutic procedure to begin with, with its effects and side-effects in detail. In particular, the treatment of cancer conditions using radiotherapy (radio-oncology) is performed at the Radiotherapy Centre in Freiburg using the best techniques and human welfare. In order to support you at this difficult time, we will make it easier to organise matters. We will undertake the appointment arrangements and co-operation with the surgeons, oncologists and psycho-oncologists involved in the treatment for you.

Dr. Weissenberger’s main focus is on the treatment of cancer conditions. These include tumours of the breast, prostate, lungs and of the gastrointestinal tract.  Thanks to its longstanding experience, Dr. Weissenberger’s team is able to treat frequent cancer conditions in a practised manner and individually adapted to your situation. In this way, for breast cancer, for example, a treatment which preserves the breast can be aimed at in many cases and the relapse rate can be lowered to 5 – 10%. Here, thanks to respiration-triggered irradiation (respiratory gating), undesirable irradiation of the surrounding tissues (particularly of the lungs) can be considerably minimised by respiratory movements.

Even for prostate cancer, the rate of local relapse (recurrence of cancer at the site of origin) can be lowered by 20%. A variety of techniques for this are provided at the Radiotherapy Centre in Freiburg, from irradiation from outside (percutaneous), right up to brachytherapy (irradiation from the interior). In the process, the state of the art form of 3-D irradiation technique (IMRT) enables optimum individual planning and precise tumour irradiation. This form of irradiation is persuasive, due to better long-term results and less damage to surrounding tissues.

As well, you are advised about the side-effects of the irradiation (skin irritation, fatigue) and how you can prevent or treat these.

The treatment itself takes place following a detailed interview and after re-visiting any possible gaps in the diagnosis. A planning CT is performed in preparation, with the aid of which the procedure and the best radiation distribution can be calculated. The irradiation itself generally lasts for only a couple of minutes and takes place several times per week over a certain period.

A further focus of Dr. Weissenberger is on the treatment of painful, inflammatory joint conditions (tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, calcaneal spur, arthritis of the joints, etc.). Radiotherapy is generally the last resort after failed medication and physiotherapeutic treatment. Thanks to the anti-inflammatory effect of the irradiation, which also inhibits autoimmune processes, Dr. Weissenberger’s treatment results in a marked reduction in pain in many cases. Here, it is important that the effect generally does not appear directly during the early stages of the treatment, but after some delay.

During the treatment, there is a detailed discussion of the progression of the treatment at least once per week. Here, Dr. Weissenberger and his team will explain the progress of your treatment in detail. The Radiotherapy Centre will also be there for you following the completion of the treatment and the follow-up care, if you have questions concerning the side-effects of the irradiation or other complaints.

Thanks to the outstanding medical treatment and the caring atmosphere, you are in the best of hands under Dr. Weissenberger at the Radiotherapy Centre in Freiburg. Dr. Weissenberger collaborates with leading specialist centres and specialist surgeons, specialists in internal medicine, oncology and psycho-oncology in order to ensure a complete and individually the best treatment.
