About Prof. Dr Carsten O. Tibesku – Knee Specialist in Bavaria
Prof. Dr Carsten O. Tibesku is a specialist in knee surgery and has been self-employed since 2017 at the Straubing KneePractice, which he founded. Patients with both statutory and private insurance policies can be treated there. At the modern practice, Prof. Dr Tibesku deals exclusively with diagnostics as well as conservative and surgical therapy of arthrosis of the knee joint, focusing on implantation of artificial knee joints. Prof. Dr Tibesku is an expert in orthopaedics and has other specializations and additional qualifications. He pursues sports medicine, physical therapy, manual therapy, and special pain treatment as well.
Recognizing Knee Arthrosis
For more than 10 years, Prof. Dr Tibesku has focused his clinical activities exclusively on the treatment of knee joint arthrosis. To diagnose osteoarthritis of the knee, the knee specialist examines symptoms such as knee pain and temporary stiffness of the knee. The expert examines range of motion of the knee joint, considers alignment, and examines whether there are other possible causes for the pain (e.g. such as damage to the meniscus or the ligaments). As a rule, cartilage damage can be discovered on an X-ray. However, CT, MRI or a knee scan can also be used for diagnosis.
Treatment of Gonarthrosis
The treatment of knee osteoarthritis depends on the patient’s symptoms. As a conservative therapy measure, Prof. Dr Tibesku uses shoe insoles, physiotherapy or injections into the knee joint to slow the progression of cartilage damage and improve the patient’s quality of life.
If the cartilage damage is not yet very pronounced, Prof. Dr Tibesku applies cartilage reconstruction procedures. Above all, microfracturing should be mentioned here. During this procedure, the bone surface lying underneath the damaged cartilage is drilled into by means of an arthroscopy. At the perforation holes, blood cells can then escape from the now broken (fractured) bone and differentiate into the desired cartilage cells. If the operation is successful, an improvement of symptoms can be expected in up to 80% of patients.
In case of severe cartilage damage, the implantation of an artificial knee joint is a promising therapeutic option.
Expert for Knee Joint and Knee Prosthesis Replacement
Prof. Dr Tibesku’s surgical speciality is the implantation of artificial knee joints. Since the beginning of his medical career, he has been involved both practically and scientifically in the functional results of knee endoprostheses. To this day, he continues his research on the development of arthrosis and the improvement of knee prostheses. Every year, he performs more than 700 operations during which he treats patients with an artificial knee joint. Depending on the findings in a patient, he uses individually adapted solutions from partial prostheses to surface replacement and knee joint replacement.
Research and Awards
Prof. Tibesku has also been involved in numerous clinical studies mainly dealing with the results after a patient therapy with osteoarthritis of the knee joint by either applying conservative or surgical treatment methods. He has also carried out biomechanical studies on the replacement of a knee joint.
For his work, Prof. Dr Carsten O. Tibesku has received various prizes and awards. In addition to the Poster Prize of the German Congress for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery 2006, he received the 2016 Research Prize of the European Knee Society.
