Certified Obesity Centre in North Rhine-Westphalia

The Eschweiler Obesity Centre in North Rhine-Westphalia was successfully certified in 2017 by the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV) as a centre of excellence for obesity and metabolic surgery. A broad-based, cross-linked treatment concept, individual therapy options, plus continuous follow-up care all ensure patients receiving quality medical nurture at the highest level. Both, the Obesity Clinic's nursing wards as well as the staff’s examination and surgical techniques are geared to the specific needs of heavyweight patients. In addition, the hospital is equipped in line with latest technical standards.

Professional Help for People with Severe Excess Weight

Dr Dellanna and his team advise patients on all issues related to obesity in order to help them losing as much weight as possible. From a body mass index (BMI) of 30, patients are considered obese. Obesity is much more than just a cosmetic problem: It is recognised as a complex disease and poses a serious health threat to people.

The most common consequential and concomitant symptoms include type II diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, as well as back and joint pain. For people whose weight is 50 percent above average, the risk of premature death is twice as high as for people of normal weight.

In addition, those affected often suffer from social, psychological, and economic consequences due to their obesity. They feel socially excluded, disadvantaged in their careers, and suffer from depression and severe physical restrictions. Patients with obesity have often endured a long suffering journey on their own without possibility for escape. The specialists at the Obesity Centre accompany their patients with great expertise, patience and devotion.

Cross-Linked Therapy for Permanent Weight Loss

The Eschweiler (North Rhine-Westphalia) Obesity Centre’s mission is to accompany severely overweight people along their path to a leaner and more active life. Because obesity is a complex disease, a joint team of therapists from a variety of medical disciplines was established. This group of professionals works together towards the success of obesity therapies. The team includes doctors and therapists from the fields of nutrition medicine and counselling, physiotherapy, internal medicine, surgery, behavioural therapy, and plastic surgery.

The initial dialogue takes place as part of a specially arranged obesity consultation. During this session, individual therapies are defined with patients as a group. Set goals are accomplished on an outpatient basis. The specialists at the Eschweiler Obesity Centre are also happy to provide a second opinion if patients are have decided to undergo a therapy or operation.

If a surgical procedure is necessary, Dr Dellanna and his team of doctors also attend to their patients after the incision is executed. Aftercare with annual check-ups - even years following a surgical measure - is particularly important to them. The Eschweiler Obesity Centre additionally offers workout classes for obese people. Furthermore, it supports various self-help groups and organises regular doctor-patient seminars.

Modern Surgery at the Eschweiler Obesity Centre in North Rhine- Westphalia

Obesity surgery is often the best treatment method to control the condition, especially if previous measures have turned out unsuccessful. If all diets fail, bariatric surgery can reduce excess weight by 60 to 80 percent within 1 to 2 years. The goal is to maintain the achieved weight loss permanently without the infamous yo-yo effect.

At the Eschweiler Obesity Centre, all common interventions, including secondary procedures, are performed minimally invasively and patient-friendly with the so-called "keyhole technique”. This approach guarantees rapid wound healing enabling rapid mobilisation. The many years of experience of the surgeons and the entire team promise a high success rate and a low complication ratio. For the Obesity Clinic in North Rhine-Westphalia, these facts have been proven true by independent quality studies.

Gastric Bypass: Faster Satiety Sensation and Accelerated Digestion

A gastric bypass removes parts of the stomach, thus reducing the volume of food to be consumed. In addition, the upper portion of the small intestine is diverted so the food path through the gut is shortened and therefore, only a portion of the edible intake is absorbed and utilised.

Gastric Band to Limit Food Intake

Gastric banding surgery serves to reduce daily food consumption. For this purpose, a size-adjustable silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. This creates a pouch at the stomach’s top by filling up first during food ingestion and therefore, causing a very rapid feeling of satiety. Gastric bands are often used in young and motivated patients as they can be more easily removed and thus the effect easily reversed.

Gastric Tubing (Sleeve Gastrectomy) / Gastric Tube

During a gastric tube operation, about ninety percent of the stomach is removed, leaving only a small tube-shaped residual stomach behind. This procedure also reduces the production of gastric acid and therefore, decreases the production level of the "appetite-stimulating" ghrelin hormone. Sleeve gastrectomy or gastric tubing is one of the most frequently performed obesity surgeries in Germany.

Wide Range of Surgical Services

The Clinic for General, Abdominal, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Proctology and Bariatric Surgery, under the direction of Dr Dellanna, offers a versatile range of surgical services. Medical treatment procedures within the scope of general and visceral surgery include therapy for benign or malignant tumours, metastases and other diseases of the entire digestive tract - pancreas, gallbladder, thyroid and parathyroid glands, abdominal wall and inguinal hernias, as well as rectal diseases.

Thoracic surgery focuses on following actions: benign and malignant lung tumour therapy, monitor-assisted diagnosis of unclear processes in the chest, diseases of the pleura, treatment of pulmonary collapse, and implantation of pacemaker systems or media for venous administration of drugs.
