Eye Lasering in Berlin: Highly Qualified Eye Specialists with Many Years of Experience
The renowned ophthalmologists at Smile Eyes Berlin have been specializing in refractive surgery. These procedures change the overall refractive power of the eye and thus represent an alternative to contact lenses or glasses for over 15 years.
Smile Eyes Berlin treats many eye diseases, such as cataracts, glaucoma, retinal diseases, and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and performs aesthetic procedures such as wrinkle treatment and eyelid correction.
Using innovative methods and individual ophthalmological treatment concepts, the team of experienced eye specialists takes care of the specific needs of their patients and offers customized medical care.
SMILE Method: State-of-the-Art, Minimally Invasive Laser Eye Treatment
SMILE is an acronym for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction, i.e., lens extraction via a small incision. This does not refer to the eye's lens but to a narrow, lens-shaped piece of the eye's cornea.
The SMILE method is an ultra-modern eye lasering technique to eliminate defective vision, which was developed by ophthalmologists from Smile Eyes together with the laser manufacturer Zeiss and has been used successfully more than three million times worldwide.
With the help of a laser, a small tunnel incision of 2-2.5 mm is made in the cornea, and the so-called lenticule, a lens-shaped fragment, is created in a deeper layer of the cornea. This is then exposed and removed through the tunnel incision, which changes the eye's refractive power.
Compared to other laser eye procedures, the SMILE method is minimally invasive, which results in faster healing and allows the patient to resume sports and work the day after the operation. The procedure can also be carried out on thin corneas or dry eyes. Even severe visual defects can be corrected.
Femto-LASIK: Permanently Correcting Defective Vision
Femto-LASIK is a further development of the proven LASIK method (laser in situ keratomileusis). As with LASIK, a piece of the superficial cornea is folded upwards as a flap, and part of the deeper corneal layer is removed with a laser, thus correcting the eye's refractive power.
In Femto-LASIK, however, instead of the microkeratome, a blade used to create the corneal flap, the flap is also cut with a high-precision femtosecond laser. This technique, therefore, requires no blades at all, which minimizes complications.
Specialists for Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL) in Berlin
Implantable contact lenses are an alternative to laser treatment of the eyes, which has been established for twenty years. Instead of removing tissue, an additional lens made of biocompatible natural Collamer is inserted between the lens and the patient's iris. In contrast to laser treatment, this procedure is reversible, as the lens can be removed again at any time, for example, if the visual defect changes or a better treatment is developed. Each lens is individually adapted to the visual defect and contains an integrated UV blocker.
An additional artificial lens can also be implanted in patients unsuitable for laser eye correction due to a too-thin cornea or a very severe visual defect. In addition, the flow of tears and the cornea's stability remain unaffected.
Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE): Clear Vision and Improved Quality of Life
Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is a surgical procedure that can also be used to treat very severe visual defects. The surgical technique is the same as for the surgical treatment of cataracts.
One or both lenses become cloudy in this disease, leading to blindness. The treatment consists of removing and replacing the clouded lens with an artificial lens.
To do this, an incision is first made at the edge of the cornea to access the lens. Using ultrasound waves, the core of the lens is fragmented and suctioned out through the small incision. The new lens is then inserted into the capsular bag in a folded state. It unfolds and positions itself automatically. This surgery is a routine procedure.
Although there is no disease in the lens during refractive lens replacement, it is replaced with an artificial lens that has been precisely adapted to the patient's visual defect to correct it.
The disadvantage of the artificial lens is that the eye can no longer "accommodate" different distances after the procedure. This is why this method is usually only used from age 40, as the ability to accommodate is naturally significantly reduced at this age.
In younger people, refractive lens replacement is a treatment option, especially in cases where cataracts persist alongside defective vision, which can be treated in the same surgery.
Multifocal Lenses: Glasses-Free Vision at All Distances
The implantation of a multifocal lens is a special form of refractive lens replacement developed because the eye loses its ability to accommodate both naturally and after the implantation of an artificial lens with increasing age.
Multifocal and trifocal lenses are specially developed lenses that divide the light entering the eye into several focal points, with the trifocal lens having an additional focal point at the intermediate distance.
As the light is divided, there is a slight reduction in the overall quality of vision compared to the young, healthy eye. However, the different focal points ensure sharp vision at different distances, so varifocals or reading glasses are no longer necessary. The principle even works in poor light conditions.
