Prof. Dr Peter Szurman is a recognised specialist in minimally invasive eye surgery and the Chief Physician of the Sulzbach Eye Clinic. With his team of 31 specialised ophthalmologists, he treats more than 40,000 outpatients and almost 6,000 inpatients annually at one of Germany's largest and most modern eye clinics at a highly scientific level, with state-of-the-art technical equipment.
Prof. Szurman has extensive surgical experience in both the anterior and posterior segment of the eye. With 22,000 eye surgeries a year, the Sulzbach Eye Clinic is considered one of the largest specialized eye centres in Germany. Prof. Szurman is not only a recognized expert in minimally invasive eye surgery, but he has also gained scientific recognition worldwide with his numerous newly developed surgical procedures and more than 200 publications.
Specialist in Corneal Transplantation
Prof. Szurman and his team are recognized experts in corneal transplantation. The procedures have made great progress in recent years and have been significantly enhanced, owing to the scientific work conducted by Prof. Szurman. Under his leadership, the Sulzbach Eye Clinic has become a pioneer of the new procedure of partial corneal transplantation (DMEK). This is a particularly gentle surgical procedure of the cornea, decisively scientifically developed by his team. The Sulzbach transplantation system, advanced and patented in 2012 as the first of its kind in the entire world, has so far been used to successfully treat more than 10,000 patients in 50 countries. Prof. Szurman leads his own research group at the Sulzbach Eye Clinic and conducts training courses for international ophthalmologists on the subject of partial corneal transplantation.
Internationally-Acclaimed Retinal Surgery Centre 24/7
The Sulzbach Eye Clinic has been the largest retinal surgery centre in Germany since 2015. Under the direction of Prof. Szurman and the Head of the Department, Dr Boden, over 1700 major retinal and vitreous body surgeries are performed here annually. It is also here that even more delicate and minimally invasive surgical procedures have been developed in recent years, and they were all influenced by their own research team of the Sulzbach Eye Clinic. Patients with retinal conditions have at their disposal an experienced network of retinal specialists available around the clock, 365 days a year for emergencies or scheduled retinal surgeries.
One of a Few Reference Centres For Retinal Implants in Europe
For blind patients who have lost their sight due to a retinal disease such as Retinitis pigmentosa, a retina implant, also known as a retina chip, offers the opportunity to regain an oriented vision. This innovative method of artificial vision has been tested and the procedure has been performed 200 times worldwide. 11 retinal implantations were performed in the Sulzbach Eye Clinic alone under the supervision of Prof. Szurman. Scientifically, over the last 20 years, he has dedicated himself to the development of these pioneering electronic visual prostheses.
Cutting-Edge Ophthalmic Clinic With Heart, Excellent Appointment Management, and a Comfort Station
The eye clinic is one of the most modern and fastest growing clinics in Germany. Here, patients with common or rare eye complaints are always treated with the highest level of professionalism and using the latest state-of-the-art technology. The special reputation of the clinic is based on the consistent specialisation on innovative and minimally invasive treatment methods that are significantly gentler than the old-type, major eye surgeries.
Still, with all that high-end technology: people are always the main focus. The team of experts in ophthalmology and specialised nursing staff take care of the diagnosis, the surgical planning and follow-up care plan for their patients. In 16 specialist consultations, the ophthalmological surgical procedures are carefully planned by renowned experts and the patients are given detailed advice. For the special comfort during the hospital stay, a hotel-like comfort station with modern equipped rooms is available to patients upon request.
