Information About the Field of Cardiac Surgery

What Does Cardiac or Heart Surgery Do?

It is no coincidence that heart surgery or cardiac surgery is considered as the supreme medical discipline, given the fact that this special field deals with the surgical treatment of heart disease, and in other words, treatment of our most important muscle. Although cardiac surgery primarily focuses on heart transplants, bypass surgery and stents implantation in calcified coronary vessels are among the most common heart surgery procedures.

When Do I Need a Heart Disease Doctor?

Diseases of the heart and circulatory system are widespread in developed countries and belong to the leading causes of death worldwide. Promoted by factors such as obesity, diabetes hypertension, and smoking, in many cases these diseases reach a stage where they can only be treated surgically by a cardiologist.

Disorders requiring a heart surgery include coronary heart disease, heart attack, and arteriosclerosis (calcification of the arteries). Also, aneurysms (enlarging of vessels) and congenital heart failure are a common reason for heart incisions. In addition, cardiac valves surgeries in case of valves stenosis (narrowing of cardiac valves) are gaining in importance.

Which Surgical Procedures are Available for Cardiac Surgery?

Medical technology is developing continuously. Certain operations such as implants of heart valves can be executed minimally invasive by means of a catheter (catheter-based valves implantation) or by a small incision in the chest area (minimally invasive cardiac valves surgery). These gentle surgical procedures make such surgeries possible for patients with particular surgical risks (e.g. severe concomitant diseases, restricted lung function, and old age).

In order to make the performance of certain surgeries even safer and smoother, doctor-controlled robots are used in some cases. An example for this is the robot-assisted bypass surgery.

Furthermore, cardiac arrhythmias are treated in cardiac hospitals. Here, the cardiologist may treat atrial fibrillation by means of endoscopic procedures with high success rates (thoracoscopic ablation of atrial fibrillation and atrial ear occlusion) or, if necessary, uses a heart pacemaker or defibrillator.

Where can I Find an Experienced Heart Disease Doctor or Heart Hospital in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria?

Naturally, those in need of heart surgery try to find the best medical treatment possible for themselves. So the patient wonders where he or she will finds the best heart clinic. Since this question cannot be answered objectively and a reputable doctor would never claim to be the best, patients can only rely on the cardiologist’s expertise. The more heart surgeries a doctor has performed, the better he will usually be in his specialty. At PRIMO MEDICO you will only find experienced heart disease doctors and the best heart clinics in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
