About Univ.-Prof. Dr Hendrik Treede

Univ.-Prof. Dr Hendrik Treede is a specialist in cardiac surgery and Director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at the University Medical Centre of Mainz.

Prof. Treede and his team always work closely together with other specialist disciplines at the University Medical Centre, such as cardiologists, angiologists, radiologists and pathologists. Thus patients are always granted the best possible treatment that reflects the current state of scientific knowledge.

Utmost Expertise in Minimally Invasive Coronary Surgery

Prof. Treede and his team rely on the very latest developments in heart surgery in order to make surgeries less traumatic and to minimise the risks. This becomes immediately apparent for the patients in the field of minimally invasive surgery. Thanks to smaller incisions in the skin, patients require significantly less post-operative pain-relief, are more quickly resilient again, and results are good in comparison to the standard open-chest operations that were previously customary.

Heart surgery under Prof. Treede has been making use of state-of-the-art minimally invasive technology for bypass operations for 3 years already. The patient's chest is not opened up, as was previously customary, nor is the circulatory system linked up to a heart-lung machine; rather, the patient’s "clogged" arteries are operated upon through only small incisions. This technique is significantly less invasive and is associated with fewer complications, with the result that patients feel fit again after the surgery more quickly than when compared to classic open bypass operations. With this expertise, Prof. Treede is ranked among the best in his area of speciality.

Specialist in Heart Valve Reconstruction and Replacement

Similarly, the Mainz cardiac surgeons, with their years of experience, carry out minimally invasive aortic valve replacement surgery. Aortic valve stenosis is the most common form of change that valves undergo and causes older patients, in particular, serious symptoms that limit their quality of life. Patients complain of (among other things) stabbing chest pain, shortness of breath, and frequently also of circulatory collapse.

Heart valve insufficiencies (= heart valve leakage) can be reconstructed at the University Medical Centre of Mainz. This often saves patients from having artificial heart valves, which would have had the effect of thinning the blood over the course of the rest of the patient's life – biological replacement valves would need to be replaced after approximately ten years. By modifying the body's own heart valve, which is in part already possible with minimal invasiveness, patients are given the most natural option.

Heart Surgery forYoung and Old

Another important aspect of Prof. Treede's area of speciality is surgery for congenital heart defects. In this field, for example, children with congenital valve defects, cardiac abnormalities (abnormal shunts) or embryonic malformations of the heart (e.g. transposition of the great arteries, tetralogy of fallot, aortic and pulmonary stenoses) are cared for and treated. Early care from experienced specialists is essential here in order to prevent long-term consequences such as pulmonary hypertension, irreversible heart insufficiency (heart failure) or brain damage due to reduced availability of oxygen. In addition, the young patients and their parents are provided for as best as possible in the children's clinic, with patient-oriented care. In the meantime, the technical possibilities of paediatric surgery are now immense - the surgeons can usually heal through interventions on a child's heart and prevent consequential damage, compared to previous years, when operations could, for the most part, merely mitigate or relieve the situation.
