About

Prof. Dr Friedrich-Christian Rieß is a specialized heart surgeon and Chief Physician of Cardiac Surgery as well as Chairman of the Albertinen Cardiovascular Centre at the Albertinen Hospital.

Taking into account that the Albertinen Hospital features the most modern surgical procedures, the clinic enables cardio-surgical interventions that are less stressful for patients. Examples include minimally invasive surgical techniques and abandonment of heart-lung machine usage in particular. At the Cardiovascular Centre in Hamburg, 1600 patients are treated surgically at the highest level every year.

Specialist in Complete Arterial Bypass Surgery: Prof. Rieß

Among other things, Prof. Rieß specialises in complete arterial bypass surgery, using exclusively the two internal thoracic arteries. In comparison to venous bypass surgery, this approach offers patients the benefit that bypasses no longer become narrowed or completely blocked so quickly anymore. The rate of Professor Rieß's complete arterial bypass operations is now 99%. This puts the Albertinen hospital in Hamburg high above the German national average of only approx. 25%.

Almost All Bypass Operations Can Be Performed Without Heart-Lung Machine

Prof. Rieß and his team of heart surgeons are well above the average of coronary surgeries that do not use a heart-lung machine. Professor Rieß is now able to perform 98% of all isolated coronary bypass operations without a heart-lung machine. Nationwide, the average is only 18.1%. The so-called off-pump procedure reduces the incidence of neurological complications as well as the amount of blood used during surgery. In particular, patients with severe concomitant diseases such as calcifications of the aorta, diabetes mellitus, renal dysfunction, and others benefit from this procedure. In addition, when the heart-lung machine is dispensed with, it is almost never necessary to use foreign blood.

Heart Operations in Line with State-of-the-Art Medical Development

It is not only cardiac patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) that are in good hands with heart specialist Prof. Rieß. All other heart diseases, such as valve defects, aortic aneurysms, and cardiac arrhythmias are also treated and operated upon at the Albertinen Hospital's Cardiovascular Centre in Hamburg – in accordance with state-of-the-art medical knowledge. Heart valve reconstructions and replacements are performed using interventional or minimally invasive procedures as far as possible. Aortic aneurysms can be surgically treated more gently as well.

Holder of the Federal Cross of Merit: Prof. Rieß is a Cardiac Surgeon With Heart

Since 2005, Prof. Rieß and many other colleagues have been involved in the Albertinen Foundation's "Herzbrücke" project. The project helps children with heart disease from Afghanistan receive vital heart surgery in Germany. At the Albertinen Cardiovascular Centre, Prof. Rieß operates most of the children personally by himself. These young patients are then housed with host families in Hamburg. So far, more than 150 children have been helped with this project. Prof. Rieß was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his humanitarian achievement. You can find out more about the Herzbrücke (heart bridge) project here.
