Prof. Dr. Dr. J. Thomas Lambrechtis a specialist in maxillofacial surgery (Foederatio Medicorum Helveticorum) and a specialist in oral surgery (Swiss Dental Association – SSO) including implant surgery at the University of Basel, Switzerland. After many years as a senior resident in the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital in Kiel (Germany) he has been elected head of the Department of Oral Surgery, Oral Radiology and Oral Medicine in 1991. Thanks to his outstanding abilities in the field of oral and implant surgery, Prof. Lambrecht is also an acknowledged academic expert in this field.
He is a honorary member of the International Society for Computer Aided Surgery (ISCAS) and the International Society for Simulation Surgery (ISSS), also of the Swiss Society for Dentomaxillofacial Radiology (SGDMFR) and the Swiss Society for Oral Surgery (SSOS). In 2004 he became honorary Professor of the University of Hong Kong.
Prof. Lambrecht and his team at the Department of Oral Surgery, Oral Radiology and Oral Medicine provide the entire range of oral surgery and implant surgery. In this, they have support by the most up to date techniques such as 3-D computer and model simulation, as well as template-guided navigation, using which the optimum implantation results can be achieved, including augmentation.
The Clinic’s specially arranged implant consultation provides all the required and helpful information concerning the procedure, as well as a point of contact for any potential problems arising. Because the long-term retention of the implants is closely associated with the healthy gingiva of the oral mucosa, this is also one of Prof. Lambrecht’s particular treatment emphases. In particular, peri-implantitis, inflammation of the gingiva surrounding the implant, is enormously important. If this is not treated early, a deeper inflammation may lead to the destruction of the bone substance and hence to the loss of the implant.
A further focus of the clinic is oral surgery. This includes the surgical removal of teeth (in particular, impacted wisdom teeth), as well as the treatment of bone and soft tissue cysts. Benign and malignant changes in the oral mucosa can also be investigated, excised and then histologically diagnosed. Here, there is close collaboration with specialists in fields such as ENT, dermatology and radiology.
Dental conditions may not just have consequences in the region of the oral cavity, however. They can spread into the region of the maxillary sinuses. These critical conditions can also be treated successfully by Prof. Lambrecht’s team.
The Department of Oral Surgery, Oral Radiology and Oral Medicine in Basle is one of the most up to date university institutions in the field. It is a superbly equipped dental centre, with two operating theatres, a recovery room, its own specialised X-ray Department with two 3-D volume tomography units and a Histology Laboratory (for scientific investigation of tissue samples) and a Cell Culture Laboratory.
Patients are cared for by a highly professional team consisting of Prof. Lambrecht, four Consultants and seven Assistant Surgeons. They perform oral surgery treatments using the most up to date techniques, under local anaesthetic as well as general anaesthetic (e.g. for anxious patients). These include, for example, microsurgical procedures using the surgical microscope, endoscopic surgery using the smallest possible incisions and the CO2 laser as a reliable, precise and gentle surgical instrument for incisions in the region of the oral mucosa.
Some of the first-class procedures of Prof. Lambrecht and his team are transferred to video for national and international training of oral surgeons and implant surgeons or are presented at conferences.
