About Dr Laszlo Kiraly

Laszlo Kiraly, MD, is an ophthalmologist and specialist in laser eye surgery and eye surgery in Leipzig. He has been the head of the Eye and Laser Center since 2012. Dr Kiraly has many years of expertise in the field of laser eye treatment. He is the only ophthalmologist in East Germany to be a member of the Visian-ICL expert panel. The two locations of the Smile Eyes Eye and Laser Center Leipzig, am Markt and Lampestraße, are certified by the Technical Control Board. Exclusively qualified specialists are employed there.

Dr Kiraly and his team have all up to date & state-of-the-art diagnostic options at their disposal at the eye center in Leipzig. The diagnosis is followed by a comprehensive consultation about the possible therapy options. Eye surgeries are carried out in the eye clinic of Dr Kiraly and Dr Kotomin with the utmost care according to the latest knowledge. The two eye surgeons are always on site to answer any of your questions or help you in case of problems.

Specialist for Eye Laser Surgery in Leipzig

Seeing without glasses or contact lenses is a fervent wish for many patients with defective vision. Dr Kiraly has specialized in laser eye surgery for years and great experience in the field. Together with the patient he determines the individually suitable laser procedure. The following laser procedures are performed by Dr Kiraly:

  • ReLEx smile: The ReLEx smile method is considered the 3rd generation of laser eye treatment. The treatment is suitable for nearsighted patients and is particularly gentle.
  • Individualized Femto-LASIK: The individualized Femto-LASIK treatment is performed only on the surface and keeps the stability of the cornea intact. There is no longer a need for a flap or incision as with traditional LASIK. Laser correction is non-contact and provides a gentle and safe procedure for correcting refractive errors.
  • Femto-LASIK: Compared to standard LASIK, Femto-LASIK is much gentler on the eye and also significantly more precise. The procedure takes an average of 30 seconds per eye and is hardly noticed by the patient. This procedure is particularly suitable for patients with a small corneal thickness.

All the steps are available from a single source for the laser eye surgery patients at the Eye Laser Center starting with the diagnosis to the treatment to the after care.

Lens Surgery in Leipzig

Laser eye treatment is not possible for some patients. Reasons for this can be a too thin or diseased cornea, a very high ametropia or a clouding of the natural eye lens. Nevertheless, there are various treatment methods for these patients to fulfill their wish of a life without glasses or contact lenses. Dr Kiraly in Leipzig is an expert in lens surgery using implantable contact lenses (Visian ICL) or multifocal lenses.

  • Visian ICL: The Visian ICL is an artificial lens that is inserted in addition to the patient’s natural lens. The lens is reversible and can be removed at any time. The Visian ICL is a safe and modern alternative to laser eye surgery and is particularly suitable for patients with very high refractive errors.
  • Multifocal lenses: Multifocal lens surgery is a lens exchange with laser technology. Especially in cases of advanced presbyopia or first signs of cataracts, multifocal lenses allow a life without reading glasses or varifocals.

Laser Vitreolysis for Vitreous Opacity (Floaters) in Leipzig

People suffering from vitreous floaters see flying dots or streaks in front of the eye. These are protein particles in the vitreous body that cast a shadow on the retina when light falls on them. These opacities can be treated with laser vitreolysis now. The procedure is also known as 'floater laser'. In laser vitreolysis, extremely short pulses of laser light are shone into the vitreous. The floaters absorb this laser energy, are thereby crushed and dissolve.

Cataract Surgery in Leipzig With Laser or Premium Lenses

In cataract, vision becomes increasingly blurred due to clouding of the lens and results in reduced vision. Dr Kiraly and his team in Leipzig perform cataract surgery in the conventional way. In this case, the clouded lens is removed in an outpatient setting. As a replacement for the patient's clouded lens, an artificial lens, that is individually adapted to each patient, is placed. If desired and suitable, this new lens can replace both distance and reading glasses.

As an alternative to the conventional surgical technique, a new laser technology is available: Using the very latest generation femtosecond laser, the eye surgeon's scalpel becomes unnecessary. Cataract surgery is gentler due to the use of the laser.

Glaucoma Therapy

In most cases, glaucoma is caused by increased intraocular pressure. This leads to a restriction of the field of vision and, if left untreated, to blindness. Modern ophthalmology can treat glaucoma well with eye drops. Glaucoma treatment with lasers can reduce the production of aqueous humor and improve drainage. Both of these methods prevent the increase of intraocular pressure. In case of failure of the two mentioned methods, cataract can be treated surgically.

Detection of Keratoconus and the Best Possible Treatment

In keratoconus disease, the cornea of the eye bulges forward in an uncontrolled manner, resulting in nearsightedness and a corneal curvature. With modern equipment, very accurate images can be taken of the anterior and posterior surfaces of the cornea to make an early diagnosis. Treatment options include UVA cross-linking, corneal implants, or keratoplasty depending on the status of the eye disease. Dr Kiraly personally discusses the optimal keratoconus therapy with the patient  after a detailed diagnostic examination.

Eyelid Surgery Leipzig

Surgeries on the eyelid are performed at the Eye Center in Leipzig not only for aesthetic but also for functional reasons. Malignant or benign tumors in the eyelid are also removed by Dr Kiraly and colleagues at the highest level and are subject to the highest aesthetic standards. The special skills for carrying out special plastic-reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries in ophthalmology are confirmed by the certificate of the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG) and Professional Association of Ophthalmologists of Germany (BVA).

Dry Eye

Up to 15% of the population is affected by dry eyes. Symptoms increase with age and include high sensitivity to light, itching, constant blinking, eye fatigue from working on screens, and redness and problems with reading. Dr Kiraly and his colleagues at the Eye and Laser Center Leipzig offer both short-term and long-term treatment options, such as treatment with the so-called E-Eye, a light pulse therapy.

Diabetes Mellitus and Retinal Vascular Occlusion

The eye diseases diabetes mellitus and retinal vessel occlusion affect the central retina (macula) as well as the periphery. In the case of macular edema, symptoms of increasing deterioration of visual performance as well as distorted vision become apparent. Laser treatments and injections provide relief in this case.

Macular Degeneration (AMD)

The macula lueat is the most light-sensitive area of our retina and therefore the point of sharpest vision. Even small impairments can have serious consequences for vision. Dr Kiraly and his colleagues are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of dry and moist AMD.
