Thorough Diagnosis by Experienced Eye Specialists

At the Bern Eye Clinic at Lindenhof Hospital, the patient receives centre stage. In a detailed initial examination, our team, under the direction of ophthalmology specialists, gathers meaningful information to assess the patient's overall situation. Based on this diagnosis, the best possible treatment strategy is determined and the chances of successful treatment are estimated. The findings and possible therapies are discussed in detail with the patient and are tailored to his or her personal needs. Treatment at the Bern Eye Clinic at Lindenhof Hospital can take place that very day, if medically necessary.

Tailor-Made Therapies for Complex Eye Diseases in Bern

Eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinal detachment are carefully diagnosed at the eye clinic by experienced specialists. After consultation with the patient, the best possible therapy is then determined. The majority of treatments at the Bern Eye Clinic are at low stress levels for both the patient and the eyes and are carried out on an outpatient basis. However, depending on the situation, they can be performed on an inpatient basis as well.

Cataract Surgery: The Only Possible Treatment for Cataracts

The familiar term "cataracts" describes a clouding of the eye lenses which can lead to severely impaired vision and even complete blindness. Cataracts are a typical sign of ageing, but on rare occasions are also triggered by drugs such as cortisone. Afflictions are completely painless and can be treated at any time.

The only option to cure cataracts is surgical replacement of the patient's own clouded lens with a clear, artificial lens. This relatively short procedure is performed by the specialists at the Bern Eye Clinic under local anaesthesia. Only artificial lenses of the highest quality, so-called "premium lenses", are used to replace eye lenses which have become clouded. Depending on the subjects preliminary examinations, he or she will also be offered custom-fitted artificial lenses. This is the case for example, if severe corneal curvature has occurred, in order to achieve additional improvement in contrast and twilight vision. After preliminary examinations, decisions are placed in accordance with the patient. The artificial lens is chosen so that the eyes fit together after surgery and the weakest possible lenses are required.

Glaucoma: Expert Glaucoma Treatment in Bern

With glaucoma malfunction, the optic nerve is damaged. This disease is asymptomatic for a long time and only becomes noticeable at a later stage, when a large part of the nerve fibres has already been lost. One typical symptom is the arcuate restriction of the field of vision. Left untreated, glaucoma can lead to blindness. Risk factors include elevated intraocular pressure, familial predisposition, and overly high or low blood pressure. The aim of treatment is to slow down the course of the disease, and ideally to stop it.

It is not possible to restore damage already done. Initial treatment is practiced with the application of drugs in form of eye drops.

In case of incompatibilities or a lack of resonance of the person’s body, laser therapy or glaucoma surgery can be performed at the Bern Eye Clinic at Lindenhof Hospital. The latter usually aims at enabling controlled drainage of the aqueous humour in order to reduce intraocular pressure and to relieve the optic nerve.

Disorders of the Central Retina in the Eyes (Macular Diseases)

With diseases of the macula, the centre of the retina or fixation point is affected – the area of sharpest vision. Like many other eye defects, conditions of the macula such as macular degeneration are painless and only manifest themselves initially by a reduction in vision and increased glare sensitivity. Therapy options for stabilising a patient's vision range from eye drops to laser or surgical treatment, depending on the cause. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) causes distorted and blurred vision due to pathological accumulation of fluid in the retina. In addition, scarring often occurs, leading to blind spots in patient's visual field. In case of a wet AMD, unlike with dry AMD, injecting medications can significantly restore vision.

Retinal Detachment: Quick Help From the Bern Eye Clinic at Lindenhof Hospital

In cases of a retinal detachment, the inner part of the retina, which contains the photoreceptor cells, separates from the underlying layer (retinal pigment epithelium). Since the pigment epithelium supplies the retina with oxygen and nutrients, the function of the retina is no longer guaranteed, and untreated, this may result in blindness. Typically, early symptoms of retinal detachment include the perception of flashes and black spots. At later stages, shadowing or a sudden deterioration of vision sets in. If retinal detachment is suspected, an ophthalmologist should be consulted immediately (within 24 hours) and necessary treatment initiated.

With other illnesses of the eye, too, like virus-induced inflammation of the uvea (uveitis) or dry eyes (keratoconjunctivitis sicca, KCS), patients are, again in good hands and will be well advised by the ophthalmology specialists at the Bern Eye Clinic at Lindenhof hospital.
