About Prof Dr Michael Tamm
Prof. Dr. Michael Tamm is a specialist pneumologist and is Head of the Lung Centre at the University Hospital, Basle.
This is the largest specialist lung centre in all of Switzerland and is set apart by the most up-to-date diagnostics and outstanding treatment. At the same time, Prof. Tamm and his team conducting intense research in the area of the causes of and therapeutic options for various lung conditions. Their achievements produce the latest most advanced studies, as well as an outstanding national and international reputation in the field of pneumology.
Prof. Tamm and his renowned team provide diagnostics and treatment for the entire range of pulmonology at the highest university standard. Here, Prof. Tamm’s team works in a state of the art lung centre, equipped with a sleep laboratory, a lung function laboratory and its own endoscopy department. For Prof. Tamm, it is essential to provide medicine, which is personal and, at the same time, gentle to the patient's body.
Prof. Tamm has been the Senior Pneumonology Consultant at the University Hospital, Basle for some years. Following his doctorate, his practice as a consultant and his research activities, both at home and overseas, he was appointed a Reader at the University of Basle in 2002.
One of Prof. Tamm’s special fields is the diagnosis and treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This condition, often due to the consumption of tobacco, involves the consecutive destruction of the lung tissue. Patients affected complain of dyspnoea and a deterioration in capacity. As the disease progresses, the lungs can no longer absorb sufficient oxygen. An early diagnosis is important in this situation. Special clinical diagnostics are available for this in the Lung Function Laboratory in Prof. Tamm’s Lung Centre. Here, a variety of breathing tests and investigations can be performed on an in-patient or an out-patient basis. Various lung volumes can be measured in the body plethysmograph. Respiratory volumes can also be measured at rest (spirometry) and under physical stress (spiroergometry). The gas exchange function of the lungs can also be measured. If oxygen therapy is necessary, Prof. Tamm’s team will accompany you and will support you here at the highest standard.
Prof. Tamm also investigates and treats lung conditions caused by a dysfunction or the destruction of the musculature or the nerves (for example, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).
Together with the clinical investigation, laboratory, X-ray images and respiratory function tests, inspecting the airways (bronchoscopy) and the rib cage (thoracoscopy) also play a crucial role in Prof. Tamm’s clinical routine. Prof. Tamm performs the inspection techniques (viewing inside bodily cavities using a flexible tube with a camera) particularly gently and, thanks to his years of experience, particularly skilfully. Using these techniques, Prof. Tamm can obtain a precise view of your lungs, can take samples of suspect tissues, can remove foreign bodies and, if necessary, can introduce a small metal tube (stent) to keep the airways open. Using ultrasound (endosonography), he can also obtain outstanding views of the airways.
A further treatment emphasis of Prof. Tamm is cystic fibrosis (mucoviscidosis). This genetic condition is associated with an excessive production of viscous mucus in the airways. This leads to a chronic cough and frequently to severe inflammation of the lung. Over time, the lungs can no longer fulfil their function (pulmonary insufficiency) and the patient suffers from a severe lack of oxygen. The treatment is lifelong and includes respiratory exercises, inhalation, hormones, the administration of antibiotics and oxygen therapy. In some cases, a lung transplantation is the only helpful treatment option. Here, too, Prof. Tamm is able to support you sensitively and professionally.
Other emphases of Prof. Tamm and his team are the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, sarcoidosis and the diagnosis of lung-induced sleep disorders.
Many cases are discussed in the interdisciplinary (multidisciplinary) team in order to guarantee you the best possible treatment.
Particularly for international patients, the University Hospital, Basle provides a patient service, which, inter alia, looks after the organisation of rehabilitation admissions, translators and hotel stays for the family.
