About

Prof. Dr Marius J.B. Keel is a specialist in pelvic and hip surgery at the Trauma Centre Hirslanden in Zurich. There, highly specialised surgeons are dedicated to treating accident and sports injuries as well as orthopaedic problems. Prof. Keel's specialisation covers the pelvis and hip area with open or minimally invasive surgical techniques.

In addition to his specialisation in pelvic and hip surgery, Prof. Keel is also at home in the field of spinal surgery including degenerative diseases such as herniated discs, spinal canal constriction or osteoarthritis. But tumour diagnostics and treatment of tumour events of the spine are one of his competencies as well.

Specialist for Hip and Pelvic Surgery for Injuries, Infections, and Artificial Hip Joints

Prof. Dr Keel is a surgeon (FMH (Foederatio Medicorum Helveticorum; Swiss Medical Association)) with a subtitle in General Surgery and Traumatology (Trauma Surgery), as well as in Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology of the Musculoskeletal System. He has specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of injuries in addition to wear and tear of hip joints and pelvis in particular. He practises at the Hirslanden Trauma Centre in Zurich. Professor Keel has developed a new minimally invasive surgical approach (Pararectus approach according to Keel) for complicated hip joint fractures, the so-called acetabular fracture, which benefits older patients especially.

Joint Preserving Hip Surgery by Experienced Pelvic and Hip Surgeon

Joint preserving hip operations are becoming more and more important in modern hip surgery. Especially for young patients with hip malpositions, impingement or hip arthrosis, joint-preserving hip surgery offers an alternative to artificial hip joints. In addition to corrective osteotomies of the hip joint (periacetabular osteotomy (PAO)) or the thigh, open (surgical hip luxation) or arthroscopic impingement surgery is applied as well. Even after a complicated hip or pelvic fracture, the joint can be preserved by reconstruction. After a detailed diagnosis, Prof. Keel determines, together with the patient, which therapy method is the most suitable in the particular case.

Endoprosthetics of the Hip Joint and Hip Prosthesis Replacement

If the damage to the hip joint or femoral head has advanced too far, so hip joint preserving therapy can no longer result in any improvement for the patient, the implantation of an artificial hip joint offers the best chance of restoring the capability to walk again free of pain. Even exercising sports is possible again with a hip endoprosthesis. This procedure can nowadays be performed minimally invasively. Prof. Keel examines the patient's situation individually and then selects the prosthesis type and surgical approach to achieve the best possible surgical result.

In some cases, a change of hip prosthesis is necessary due to loosening or infection. This challenging operation should only be performed by experienced specialists in hip surgery. Prof. Keel performs shaft and socket changing operations with greatest care. Especially with complicated pelvic discontinuities, when the acetabulum is completely loose and there is an interruption in the pelvic ring, the combined experience of pelvic reconstruction and prosthetic surgery comes into play. Prof. Keel can also be contacted for a second opinion or expert opinion.

Expert for Reconstruction of the Acetabulum with the Pararectus Approach

Prof. Keel developed a new approach in order to be able to optimally surgically treat fractures of the acetabular (acetabulum fracture). Acetabular fracture is a bone fracture in the area of the acetabulum, which is one of the most severe fractures. If the acetabulum is displaced, the fracture must always be treated surgically. Thanks to the introduction of the new, minimally invasive surgical access (Pararectus approach), which enables a better representation of the fracture, acetabular fractures can be successfully treated in older patients with good functional results as well. If necessary, a prosthesis can be implanted simultaneously via an anterior minimally invasive approach in older patients with excessive joint damage.
