About

The ENT clinic (ear, nose and throat medicine, head and neck surgery, plastic-aesthetic surgery, voice and speech disorders, allergology) is part of the Medical Centre Düsseldorf of the Luisenkrankenhaus in Düsseldorf. The senior doctors, Prof. Dr med. Adam Kurzeja MD and Mr E. Ulrich Karmeyer, are ENT specialists and have 30 years of experience in the area of head and neck surgery. In the modern medical centre, they both apply new and proven operational procedures. The two doctors perform all surgeries themselves. Because of the high number of surgical procedures they have performed, they have acquired an expertise that justifies the trust of their patients. In addition to surgical practice, the two doctors are available as second opinion specialists. The range of treatment includes all operations of the ear, nose and throat area.

Sinus Surgery

Procedures on the sinuses (maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinus, sphenoid sinus and frontal sinus) are performed endoscopically via the nasal openings without external incision. The sinus surgery performed by Prof Dr med. Adam Kurzeja und Mr E. Ulrich Karmeyer is navigational-controlled, which minimises the complication rate because of increased precision. Using this technique, a millimetre-accurate plan of the patient is developed using the previous imaging (computer tomography and magnetic resonance tomography), which allows the surgeon to work very precisely. This technique lowers the possible complications of these operations (e.g. injury to the cranial base, optic nerve, eye muscles and olfactory nerve) and decreases the length of the procedure by specificity. Twenty years ago, Prof Kurzeja was a pioneer in the development of this system.

Ear Surgery and Hearing Improvement

The team of doctors also specialises in operations and therapies for hearing and ears. The range of treatments includes traumatic, inflammatory and tumorous changes of the outer and middle ear. A sub-area consists of operations that improve hearing in the case of the severely hearing impaired.

Operations of Outer and Inner Nose

Impaired nasal breathing can affect the health and quality of life through loud snoring or obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). Snoring mainly bothers one's life partner. Sleep apnoea, which leads to unintended night-time breathing disorders can also lead to drowsiness and reduced performance (nodding off) or even heart disease, high blood pressure and depression. Through the surgical removal of obstructions and/or the extension of the upper airway, these patients can be helped.

Plastic–Aesthetic/Reconstructive Operations

At the Medical Centre in Düsseldorf, aesthetic, shape-altering surgery on the nose as well as plastic-reconstructive surgeries are carried out after trauma and burns or in the case of large scars or tumour lesions. The services offered also include plastic-aesthetic procedures such as face and neck skin tightening (facelift), cosmetic surgery of the eyelid and correction and/or reconstruction of the auricle.

Surgical Treatment of Benign and Malignant Tumours

When removing benign and malignant tumours of the oral cavity, the nasopharynx, the sinuses, the larynx, the nose, the skin and soft neck tissues, Prof Dr med. Kurzeja and his colleague always proceed with utmost precision in order to be rid of the tumour(s) and to ensure the least possible impairment of the affected organs while maintaining their functionality. Among other things, the patients benefit from the close interaction between the different departments at the Medical Centre in Düsseldorf i.e. the patients are cared for interdisciplinarily. This includes the follow-up of patients who have been treated for tumour diseases.

Thyroid and Parathyroid Gland Surgery

Because of the anatomical features, these procedures have to be carried out in a very nerve-conserving manner. In the immediate vicinity of the gland is the nerve, which innervates the vocal cords (recurrent laryngeal nerve) and is thus responsible for phonation and the opening of the trachea (windpipe). To ensure the best functioning of these nerves, the surgeons use "neuromonitoring" during the procedure.

Salivar Gland Surgery

In procedures on the large salivary glands (parotid glands and submandibular  glands), the function of the mimic facial nerves is ensured through the use of neuromonitoring.

Laryngeal Surgery

Procedures in the area of the larynx are mainly performed using a laser and surgical microscope. This technique allows the highest precision, which is crucial for organ preservation, maintenance of function and functional improvement in this small operating field.

The inpatient procedures are carried out in the hospital. Here, the patients are individually and personally cared for by the surgeons and staff.
