Dr. Wolfgang Gesierich is a lung specialist in Munich. As Chief Physician of the Lung Centre at the Helios Clinic Munich West, he leads an interdisciplinary team of experienced physicians. His primary focus is diagnostic and interventional bronchoscopy to detect and treat all significant lung diseases.
Bronchoscopy: a Multifunctional Respiratory Endoscopy
Modern bronchoscopy uses video endoscopes. These are thin and flexible devices with a miniature video camera at their tip. Today, this procedure provides us with HDTV-quality images from inside the bronchi. The device is inserted into the lungs via the upper respiratory tract and the trachea. Flexible instruments for taking samples can be inserted into the bronchi and deep into the lungs via a working channel in the device.
Bronchoscopy can be used therapeutically to remove inhaled foreign bodies, to staunch pulmonary haemorrhages or to widen and reopen narrowed and closed airways by using various methods.
Thanks to his experience and the modern technical equipment at the Helios Clinic, Dr Gesierich will find the best route for you to endoscopic diagnosis and lung therapy. Our anaesthetists help us to make the examination as comfortable for you as possible.
Tumours of Lung and Chest
If a lung tumour is suspected, this is usually the result of indicative symptoms and pertinent changes in X-ray diagnostics and computer tomography. This situation is very stressful for those affected and requires a rapid, gentle and safe diagnosis by bronchoscopy as well as a radiological search for possible foci (metastases) using high-resolution radiological diagnostics.
Once the diagnosis of lung cancer has been concluded, Dr Gesierich's team works closely with other specialists at the Helios Clinic Munich West (thoracic surgery, oncology, radiation therapy) to provide their patients with the best possible therapy. This can consist of a resection of the primary tumour, radiochemotherapy or chemotherapy alone.
Obstructive Airway Diseases
Obstructive airway diseases are characterised by a narrowing of the airways (obstruction). The most important examples are bronchial asthma, COPD and pulmonary emphysema.
Using state-of-the-art pulmonary function diagnostics, important parameters such as forced expiratory volume in one second, vital capacity and residual volume can be determined, which then provide important clues as to the severity of the disease and the associated therapy.
Here, specialists can carry out a targeted, inhalative, drug therapy, which is supported by respiratory therapists. If these measures do not provide sufficient relief of the symptoms at advanced stages of the disease, then endoscopic treatment methods may also be considered under certain conditions. The aim of this practice is to shrink ("reduce") the heavily overinflated lung, which is why this is referred to as lung volume reduction. Endobronchial valves and thermal vapour ablation can be used for this purpose. Dr Gesierich and his team have special expertise in these treatment methods.
Infectious Diseases: Pneumonia
One of the most common causes of hospitalisation is pneumonia. This disease involves acute or chronic inflammation of the lung tissue due to bacteria, viruses, fungi or toxins. If pneumonia is suspected, Dr Gesierich and his team will take a detailed medical history of the patient and carry out a thorough clinical examination. Pleural aspirates, bronchial secretion and serological examinations are requested to identify the pathogen. Modern x-rays and other medical imaging of the thorax can provide clarity about any existing shadowing. Therapy is carried out after an individual risk assessment and usually consists of antibiotics. Infectious diseases such as tuberculosis are also diagnosed by the specialists and treated according to latest therapeutic standards.
