More Information

Prof. Dr. med. Phil. Victor Valderrabano is a specialist in orthopedics and traumatology in Basel. His unique expertise lies in foot and ankle surgery, as well as arthrosis surgery and sports surgery. Since January 2015, the nationally and internationally well-respected physician and scientist has been directing the Orthopedic-Traumatological Department of the Basel Pain Clinic, a clinic of the private hospital chain Swiss Medical Network. This is where his orthopedic practice SWISS ORTHO CENTER, which complies the highest medical standard in conservative and surgical orthopedics being a modern arthrosis, sports, and foot center, is also located.

SWISS ORTHO CENTER - Orthopedic Diagnostics and Therapy at the Highest Level

Prof. Valderrabano is known beyond Switzerland's borders as an internationally accepted expert in orthopedics and traumatology. He has many years of experience in the field of arthrosis, sports, and foot orthopedics. The SWISS ORTHO CENTER at the Basel Pain Clinic has state-of-the-art technical equipment to meet the orthopedic specialist's high standards of providing his patients with the best possible individual orthopedic diagnostics and therapy.

The Most Modern Orthopedic Diagnostic Procedures

The SWISS ORTHO CENTER at the pain clinic for orthopedics in Basel is equipped with the latest high-tech equipment enabling a safe and fast diagnosis of the orthopedic problem. In addition to standard examination procedures such as x-rays and ultrasound, the most modern imaging procedures such as SPECT-CT, magnetic resonance tomography, and

computed tomography, as well as DEXA bone density measurement, are certainly available. Minimally invasive joint endoscopy (arthroscopy) is also part of our range of services. Last but not least, the Clinic for Orthopedics in Basel carries out laboratory analyses that are important for musculoskeletal diseases such as arthrosis.

Broad Orthopedic Treatment Spectrum

The SWISS ORTHO CENTER covers all therapeutic measures that are used within orthopedics and traumatology - whether conservative or surgical therapy is involved. Besides the main focus areas foot, arthrosis, and sports orthopedics, the clinic specializes in orthopedic prostheses and joint replacement as well as diseases of the spine. Knee and hip surgery and treatments of the shoulder and hand are also part of the range of services at Orthopedics Basel.

High-Performance Orthopedic Medicine for all Insurance Classes in Basel

All insurance classes are accepted in the SWISS ORTHO CENTER: illness, accident, general, semi-private, private, and self-payer. Patients can also request an appointment by telephone or online without a doctor's referral or, in acute cases, can come in without an appointment with a waiting period.

Prof. Valderrabano's Treatment Focus

Diseases of the musculoskeletal system are usually accompanied by pain and lack of mobility - whether the foot or the spine is affected. As a result, the affected patients' quality of life is significantly reduced. Prof. Valderrabano has made it his business, at Orthopedics Basel, helping his patients regain a new quality of life and activity efficiency.

Arthrosis Surgery

In addition to orthopedics and traumatology of the entire musculoskeletal system, arthrosis surgery, in particular, is considered Prof. Valderrabano's specialty. Two methods are used: joint-preserving therapy and joint replacement. The orthopedist carries out both variants skillfully and safely thanks to his many years of medical experience and consistent further training.

Joint Preserving Surgical Orthopedics

Prof. Valderrabano and his team prefer joint preserving treatments over the implantation of prostheses, as long as they are useful. In joint-preserving surgery, the arthrosis expert can reconstruct or transplant the damaged cartilage using the latest technology in a minimally invasive way. Sometimes it is possible to preserve the joint by surgical cartilage reconstruction. Depending on the initial situation, various procedures are used in arthrosis surgery to reconstruct the cartilage ranging from the removal of frayed cartilage fragments to the transplantation of repair tissue that can compensate for cartilage damage. Furthermore, the leg axis and thus the load on the cartilage surfaces can also be corrected by osteotomy.

Implantation of Artificial Joints

If the cartilage is heavily worn over a large area, the joint usually has to be replaced with an artificial joint. Prof. Valderrabano can help to restore mobility in the affected joint and improve the quality of life with a full or partial prosthesis. When it comes to prostheses and joint replacement, Prof. Valderrabano is considered an internationally accepted expert. Through his studies in biomechanics, he always has the stress on the axes in mind. When he replaces a joint, he does not only use knowledge of a surgeon, but also the ideas of a physicist or biomechanist. If this is not taken into account, the prosthesis will be incorrectly stressed from the very beginning, will start to hurt and loosen. Therefore, in most cases, a prosthesis is not simply implanted, but the complete mechanics are restored. Based on his expertise, he has developed an innovative ankle prosthesis together with American colleagues.

Foot Surgery - Specialist for Foot Orthopedics in Basel

Foot and ankle surgery, as well as treating sports injuries in the foot and ankle, are also among his specialties. This specialization has made him a demanded expert in the world of sport. Athletes from all over the world repeatedly demanded his help. The treatment spectrum in the field of foot and ankle surgery includes:

  • Ligament reconstruction
  • Fracture stabilization
  • Surgical correction of malpositions
  • Ankle joint arthrosis surgery (osteotomies, prosthetics)
  • Forefoot deformities (hallux surgery)
  • Diabetic feet

Sports Orthopedics - Many Well-Known Athletes Are Among Prof. Valderrabano's Patients

Athletes, in particular, have high demands on their musculoskeletal system. Prof. Valderrabano has successfully treated many well-known athletes with sports injuries during his career. These include the treatment of foot/ankle injuries such as torn ligaments, cartilage lesions, and knee injuries such as torn cruciate ligaments, meniscus lesions, and ligament ruptures primarily. But, also inflammations, joint dislocations, and fractures can occur in sports accidents. As with all his treatments, the Well-respected orthopedic surgeon in Basel places particular emphasis on the optimal restoration of bones, ligaments, and joints.

Outstanding Orthopedist in Switzerland

Prof. Valderrabano is one of the most outstanding physicians in the field of orthopedics and traumatology in Switzerland. Since 1996, he has been involved in many research projects in the field of biomechanics, arthrosis, cartilage, and ligament injuries, as well as muscular rehabilitation. Besides numerous awards for outstanding scientific achievements, he is also actively involved in the education and training of young doctors and colleagues. In 2009, he was appointed Professor of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the University Hospital of Basel.

President of the Society for Orthopedic-Traumatological Sports Medicine

Prof. Valderrabano's particular areas of interest are human biomechanics and sports injuries. In 2003, he completed additional training in sports medicine and obtained his second doctorate (Dr. Phil.) in biomechanics at the University of Calgary (Canada). Since 2012, he has been President of the Society for Orthopedic-Traumatological Sports Medicine, the world's second-largest association of leading sports physicians in the field of orthopedics and traumatology.
