About Prof. Dr Christoph Driessen

Prof. Dr. Christoph Driessen is a specialist in hematology and head physician of the Clinic for Medical Oncology and Hematology at the Kantonsspital St. Gallen.

The center of excellence for treating blood and lymph node cancer offers first-class international diagnostic and therapeutic options thanks to its state-of-the-art technical equipment and the team of specialists. It combines this with personal care for its patients based on trust.

The Competence Center for Leukemia and Lymph Node Cancer in Eastern Switzerland

The hemato-oncology section of the Clinic for Medical Oncology and Hematology at the Kantonsspital St. Gallen specializes in the early recognition, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care of cancers of the blood and lymphatic system. Patients with hematological cancers are helped to cure, control, or alleviate symptoms of their disease with the help of state-of-the-art diagnostics and therapy concepts. In addition, the department of hematology has the only specialized unit for the treatment of leukemia and the performance of autologous stem cell transplants in the region.

Modern Targeted Therapies

Cancers of the hematopoietic and lymphatic systems originate in the immune system and show very different degrees of aggressiveness. Through state-of-the-art diagnostics, molecular characteristics of the degenerated cells can be examined in detail. As a result, modern, targeted drugs or immunotherapies can often be used for therapy. In some instances, these therapies are better tolerated and more effective than conventional chemotherapies. Chemotherapy can be added to improve the therapeutic outcome. For some patients, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapies are not sufficient. A blood stem cell transplant may be necessary for them.

Autologous Stem Cell Transplantation

Blood stem cell transplantation is primarily used to treat leukemia (blood cancers) and lymphomas (cancers of the lymph nodes) that cannot be controlled by chemotherapy and other treatments. The goal of autologous transplantation is to destroy the cancer cells with high doses of chemotherapy. Subsequently, the own stem cells are returned to the patient to rebuild the destroyed hematopoiesis quickly.

CAR-T Cell Therapy

The new CAR-T cell therapy is immunotherapy based on the body's own but modified immune cells. These are taken from the diseased Patient and genetically reprogrammed outside the body to attack the cancer cells in a targeted and efficient manner. The procedure has proven effective in treating young adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and adults with aggressive lymphomas for whom conventional therapies have not resulted in a cure.

CAR-T cell therapy has been used as an inpatient treatment at Hematology St. Gallen to date. Other cellular therapies also use the body's defense mechanisms to recognize and destroy cancer cells. Many cellular therapies are currently still under development and in the testing phase. The Clinic for Medical Oncology and Hematology at the Kantonsspital St. Gallen is involved in numerous clinical trials so that patients can benefit from new therapeutic concepts at an early stage.
