About Neurosurgery Department in Duisburg – one of the major specialist neurosurgical clinics in Germany

Prof. Dr Martin Scholz is a specialist in neurosurgery and chief physician at the Sana Clinics’ department of neurosurgery in Duisburg. He is certified in oncologic neurosurgery, spinal neurosurgery, and vascular neurosurgery through the German Society of Neurosurgery (DGNC). He also obtained an additional qualification in "Neurosurgical Intensive Care Medicine". Furthermore, he received a master's certificate from the German Society of Spine Surgery (DGW).

The neurosurgery department at the Sana Clinics Duisburg is one of the largest specialist neurosurgery clinics in Germany and has many years of expertise. Prof. Scholz and his team treat approx. 3000 inpatients annually in 3–4 theatres and more than 7000 outpatients. In addition to outpatient clinics running on a daily basis, the neurosurgery department offers special consultation sessions for tumour and paediatric neurosurgery, neuromodulation, as well as vascular and spinal diseases.

The guiding principle and primary goal of Prof. Scholz and his team is to provide all patients with the best possible therapy at all times. Prof. Scholz pays special attention to microsurgical quality and the flow of information with patients and their relatives. In his opinion, a trusting doctor–patient relationship is essential - in addition to the art of medicine - for patients to feel comfortable and in good hands.

In order to remain among the best, employees receive continuous coaching at national and international advanced training courses. The ultra-modern and state-of-the-art (e.g. a robotic microscope with oral control) equipment available at the clinic is constantly adapted to current required standards.

Neuro-Oncological Center

The Sana Clinics Duisburg are a certified neuro center and approved by the DGNC (German Society of Neurosurgery) since 2015. The medical institution is internationally recognized, caring for numerous patients from abroad as well. In addition, the hospital is an oncological center in accordance with the German Society of Haematology and Medical Oncology (DGHO).

The hospital’s aim is to determine optimal, interdisciplinary treatment strategies for patients with brain tumours, spinal and orbital tumours, as well as tumours of the peripheral nervous system. An important component is the neurological tumour board review, where the cooperation and expertise of the different disciplines helps to develop the best possible therapy for each patient.

In addition to surgical treatments, the hospital’s workforce place focus on preoperative imaging diagnostics and surgical planning with the latest technology of MRI-CT navigation (3 devices), postoperative chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. The team uses the intraoperative evoked potentials technique in addition to three different high-end ultrasound devices for monitoring, such as the function of the optic nerves (a real specialist area of the department. Besides tumour treatments, they place further attention on psycho-oncological and early rehabilitative care for patients during therapy.

Skull Base Surgery and Orbital Surgery

For doctors, interventions in the region of the skull base and the orbital cavities are particularly demanding. Usually, Prof. Scholz and his team treat various benign or malignant tumours but especially acoustic neuromas. They emphasize custom tailored access to sensitive brain areas, tailor-made to each individual patient. To achieve this goal, the skull base surgery specialists perform micro-neurosurgical operating methods, making use of modern tools such as neuronavigation or endoscopic techniques. In individual cases, depending on the location of the tumour, it is only possible to perform an incomplete resection to prevent failure of important brain functions. In such circumstances, surgeons combine the operation with stereotactic fractionated radiation.

Neurovascular Surgery

Another clinical and scientific focus of Prof. Scholz is neurovascular surgery. He has many years of expertise in the surgical treatment of ruptured and accidentally discovered aneurysms, as well as other vascular diseases like arteriovenous malformations (AVM), AV fistulas, and cavernomas. Modern treatment concepts consist of the increasing use of interventional endovascular techniques. If treatment is necessary, the Professor determines the optimal treatment strategy individually for each patient, consisting of surgery, interventional or radiation therapy.

Spinal Surgery

Prof. Scholz is also well versed in the field of spinal surgery and masters a broad range of surgical knacks. He has been offering intervertebral disc operations in the region of the lumbar spine as full endoscopic procedures for a long time. Operations on the cervical spine are a major focus of the department, both in terms of traumatic and degenerative changes. They perform all common procedures as well as numerous special approaches. Spinal navigation with intra-operative imaging using the O-arm for complex screw systems play a special role here.

Paediatric Neurosurgery

Paediatric neurosurgery forms a separate section within the clinic. It is integrated into the paediatric department supervised by Prof. Scholz along with three specialized paediatric neurosurgeons. The very large obstetrics and neonatology departments of the Sana Clinics Duisburg main emphasis emerged through the collaboration with the department of paediatric and adolescent medicine under direction of Prof. Rosenbaum. Special focus is on endoscopic craniosynostosis surgery, tethered cords, and other spinal deformities as well as complex tumours and AVMs in children.

Pain and Peripheral Nerve Surgery

The special consultation sessions for neuromodulation in complex pain syndromes and symptoms are another emphasis of the Neurosurgery Department in Duisburg. Neurosurgical intervention can help in particular with trigeminal neuralgia. If drug therapy fails, depending on the cause of the trigeminal neuralgia, the physicians may consider surgery or occasionally stereotactic radiation as treatment option. Success rates are high for this.

Peripheral nerve tumours are a speciality of Prof. Scholz – including in neurofibromatosis patients.
