About Prof. Dr Christian Lange – Specialist in Gastroenterology & Hepatology in Essen

Prof. Dr Christian Lange is a specialist in gastroenterology and Director of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Clinic at Essen University Hospital. As a gastroenterology centre of maximum care, the clinic covers the entire spectrum of gastroenterology. All diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and the connected organs as liver, gallbladder or pancreas are diagnosed and treated.

The Essen Clinic for Gastroenterology and Hepatology focuses on the diagnosis and therapy of gastrointestinal tumours, the treatment of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases as well as diagnostic and interventional functional prognostics or therapy.

The medical centre offers the latest medical and hygienic standards. A total of 69 beds on 4 nursing wards are available for admission and treatment of inpatients. In addition, the clinic includes an intensive care unit where patients who require intensive medical therapy after major surgical procedures are treated.

First Address for Liver Diseases: The Gastroenterology and Hepatology Clinic in Essen

The early detection of liver inflammations (hepatitis) and other liver diseases presents a particular clinical challenge. It is typical for liver diseases that there are often no noticeable symptoms which would warn the patient at an early stage and prompt him to visit a doctor.

Complaints associated with liver disease such as constant fatigue, digestive problems, chronic itching or frequent nosebleeds are classified as "everyday complaints" and therefore, are often not taken very seriously. This makes a careful diagnosis all the more important as a prerequisite for healing or at least improving the disease.

Prof. Lange and his team of doctors treat patients with liver disease according to the latest standards of gastroenterology and hepatology. Among other things, virus-induced liver inflammation can be controlled by stimulating the immune system. In case of autoimmune liver disease, on the other hand, it is important to temporarily suppress the immune system.

The excellent reputation of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Clinic at Essen University Hospital has resulted in a large proportion of hepatology patients now being assigned by clinics or registered physicians outside the Greater Essen area. In recent years, this standing has accounted for the increasing numbers of patients with advanced liver disease, requiring further diagnostic clarification with regard to a liver transplant. For some patients, liver transplantation offers the best chance of a long-term cure. The Essen University Hospital has been a leading centre in the field of liver transplant since 1987, both nationally and internationally.

Specialists in the Treatment of Liver Cancer at Essen University Hospital

An important focus of the clinic is primary liver tumours – in particular hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Since the foundation of the Liver Tumour Centre in Essen in 2007 and the establishment of its own special consultation hours, the clinic has developed into a nationwide focus point in the diagnosis and therapy of hepatocellular tumours.

In order to determine the most gentle and promising therapeutic procedure for each individual patient, every case is discussed in an interdisciplinary liver tumour board review. Prof. Lange and his team master the entire spectrum of surgical, minimally invasive and drug-based medicine in HCC therapy, e.g. TACE, SIRT or radiofrequency ablation. In order to ensure optimal treatment of a hepatocellular carcinoma after diagnosis, it is prudent to see the doctor as soon as possible. Only then can all therapy options be examined at an early stage in order to achieve a cure.

Intensive Care for Chronic Gastrointestinal Diseases

Chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is the collective term for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, where those affected suffer for years from abdominal pain and diarrhoea. This discomfort is often accompanied by severe fatigue. The specialist outpatient clinic for inflammatory bowel disease of the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Clinic in Essen has been treating IBD patients for more than 30 years. Since chronic inflammatory bowel diseases often become noticeable as early as in childhood or adolescence, these patients require particular intensive medical care.

Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis refers to chronic inflammation of the colon, which is usually accompanied by ulcerous changes in the colonic mucosa. It usually begins at the lowest part of the colon and can spread from there over the entire large intestine. Typical symptoms include frequent bloody diarrhoea, a constant need to urgently pass stools, decrease in performance and weight loss. The disease progresses in relapses: phases of complete freedom from complaints alternate with symptoms of illness that require hospitalisation.

Crohn's Disease

Unlike ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease can affect all parts of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus. Most frequently, however, the transition area from the small intestine to the colon is affected. Symptoms depend on the digestive area afflicted and possible complications. Typical symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, formation of fistulas (usually in the region of the anus) and severe weight loss.

If symptoms are very pronounced during a flare-up of the disease, it is possible for sufferers of chronic inflammatory bowel disease to be admitted to the Essen University Hospital Essen as inpatients. In addition to the endoscopic treatment methods, the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Clinic also offers all established therapeutic methods along with accompanying nutritional advice by trained dieticians.

Endoscopy: Safe Diagnosis of Gastroenterological Diseases

The endoscopic department at the gastroenterology centre in Essen performs all diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic examinations. A particular focus lies in the care of liver transplant patients who have developed constrictions in the region of the bile ducts. Other areas of focus are gastroscopy and colonoscopy, during which it is possible to stop bleeding, remove polyps, implant a stent (e.g., in the oesophagus, in the small or large intestine) or perform a balloon dilatation, all at the same time.
