About Prof Dr rer physiol Dr Johannes T. Heverhagen
Professor Johannes T. Heverhagen is a physician specialising in radiology and is Director of the University Institute for Diagnostic, Interventional and Paediatric Radiology at Inselspital Bern.
For years, Professor Heverhagen has been active in all aspects of medicine: treating patients, conducting research and teaching the next generation of physicians. This combination of years of experience and a continuous search for improvement by conducting patient-centred research, Professor Heverhagen offers the entire spectrum of diagnostic, interventional and paediatric radiology services at the highest level of academic medicine.
Thanks to the latest achievements in science, radiology has evolved to become the link between diagnosis and treatment in all medical fields guaranteeing increasingly precise methods for investigation and treatment with less negative impact on other aspects of the patient's health.
This is why interventional radiology at the University Hospital has become a leader in instrumentation. Professor Heverhagen's radiology department features several ultramodern computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines, as well as conventional and digital X-rays, ultrasound machines, and special equipment for mammography, angiography and emergencies.
To ensure that you receive the best treatment possible, the Inselspital radiology department stresses an interdisciplinary approach with many experienced radiologists, physicists, health care professionals and professionals for medical-technical radiology working under the supervision of the medical doctor and physicist Professor Heverhagen. Professor Heverhagen's team shares its no. 1 goal: providing you with quick and gentle treatment and healing.
Professor Heverhagen's work focuses in particular on the interventional treatment of malignant tumours, an important part of which are different embolisation techniques such as SIRT and TACE (e.g. in liver cancer without distant metastases). This involves introducing radioactive particles or chemotherapy drugs into the vessels that are supplying blood to the tumour. This attacks the cancer right where it is located and helps make the negative impact on the rest of the body significantly less than with conventional radiation and chemotherapy.
Professor Heverhagen is also able to treat benign gynaecological diseases with the help of modern technology, including the treatment of fibroids (benign growths in the uterus) with myome embolisation.
Another focus of Professor Heverhagen and his team is the treatment of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Routine interventions are used to investigate bile ducts, the liver and stomach (ulcers, dyspepsia, reflux or heartburn), gallstones and other blockages can be removed, bleeding stopped, and new drainage routes created (e.g. when other liver vessels are blocked to prevent cirrhosis of the liver).
Some common diagnostic procedures in Professor Heverhagen's radiology department include examinations of the entire vascular (diagnosis and treatment of blood clots or thromboses) and lymphatic systems. Angiography is used to inspect various valves, veins and arteries in the body, to perform pressure measurements, and to take tissue samples.
Young patients also receive special care in Professor Heverhagen's department, with a specially trained team responsible for their overall care. The goal here is to ensure a stay free of anxiety and to give space for the child's curiosity.
To ensure that your stay with the radiology department is safe, pleasant and successful, clinical research plays an important role in the department's work. For example, our current research includes identifying ways to improve the tolerance of contrast agents used in radiology and ways to reduce radiation exposure in CT.
