About Prof. Dr Dr Wolf Drescher
Prof. Dr Dr Wolf Drescher is a specialist in endoprosthetics as well as chief physician of the clinic for orthopaedic surgery of the lower extremities and endoprosthetics at the Rummelsberg Hospital in Schwarzensbruck near Nuremberg in Bavaria.
Orthopaedic Surgery at the Highest Level
The expertise of Professor Drescher and his team of doctors lies in the surgical joint-preserving and replacement therapy of malpositions and wear-related diseases of the hip and knee joints. Whenever possible, minimally invasive surgical techniques are applied. Based at the center of finding the appropriate therapy procedure is always the patient including her or his condition’s symptoms with limitations and expectations. In line with the claim “Progress from tradition”, Prof. Drescher applies state-of-the-art technologies built on evidence-based data for the benefit of his patients.
Joint-Preserving Therapy has First Priority
In order to delay the implantation of an artificial joint as long as possible, it is necessary to correct joint changes or malpositions before severe arthrosis develops. At the Rummelsberg Hospital, joint-preserving surgeries are of first concern. Meniscus incisions, cartilage transplants, ligament reconstructions, and conversion surgeries are therefore carried out in large numbers.
Internationally Recognised Expert in Joint-Preserving Hip Surgery and Femoral Head Necrosis
Prof. Drescher is a member of an international expert panel on hip joint preservation surgery. In many cases, Prof. Drescher can still preserve joints that would otherwise be replaced artificially. Above all, the therapy of femoral head necrosis is a special focus of Prof. Drescher’s work. As Acting Vice President of ARCO, he has authored over 50 national and international scientific journal articles and book chapters on femoral head necrosis. He has also recently been appointed to an international expert panel on femoral head necrosis.
Head of the Endoprosthetics Center Rummelsberg
Joints cannot always be preserved. In the case of advanced and painful joint wear, often the only way to restore normal quality of life is to insert an artificial joint (primary endoprosthetics). At the Rummelsberg Endoprosthetics Center, all facets of knee and hip arthroplasty are covered under the direction of Prof. Drescher. The combination of the capacities and expertise of three highly qualified specialist clinics guarantees patients treatment quality at the highest level.
Specialist in Minimally Invasive Hip Arthroplasty
Prof. Dr Dr Drescher has introduced a unique therapy concept for hip arthrosis in Germany. This minimally invasive and muscle-sparing process is combined with the treatment procedure “Fast-Track Surgery” from Denmark. Ahead of time, Prof. Dr Dr Drescher discusses the measure with his patient and plans the medical conduct with help of the computer. In cases of severe joint wear (arthrosis) but good bone quality of the femur, the prosthesis can be anchored without cement. Given poor bone quality (osteoporosis), Prof. Dr Dr Drescher implants the cemented hip replacement. In the event of osteoarthritis at a young age (hip dysplasia, femoral head necrosis), the femoral-neck-preserving short-stem hip TEP is implanted. The planning stage of therapy and follow-up care is supported by the gait analysis lab in order to achieve the best possible treatment results.
The Customised Prosthesis on the Knee – the Individual Sled Prosthesis
Prof. Dr Dr Drescher at the Rummelsberg Hospital (Sana Kliniken AG) is able to have individually fitted knee prostheses made for his patients using a special computed tomography. In addition, the corresponding cutting blocks for the insertion of the knee prosthesis are adapted specifically for the individual patient. This customized implant means that less bone must be removed from the femur and tibia. Thereafter, the knee prosthesis is inserted for a precise fit. The individualisation of the knee prosthesis is a further development of the standardized sled prosthesis.
Rheumatoid Orthopaedics of Knee and Hip Joint
Rheumatic orthopaedics is another focus of orthopaedic surgery at the Rummelsberg Hospital. If a conservative therapy by the rheumatologist is no longer sufficient and joint damage has occurred, various surgical procedures are available for rheumatoid surgery. In early stages, a synovectomy (surgical removal of the synovium) can relieve symptoms and stop long-term damage from the rheumatic disease. Prof. Dr Dr Drescher carries out this therapy option for diseases of the knee or hip joint. At late stages of joint damage, good results are achieved with artificial knee and hip joints.

Information About Nuremberg
The second-largest city in Bavaria comes across as entirely unexciting. But Nuremberg is characterized by the historic buildings of the old town, surrounded by the imposing city wall. On the sandstone mountain, the medieval Kaiserburg is enthroned and gives the view over the city's roofs and the most important churches of Nuremberg. Additionally, museums, sights, shopping miles, and fancy stores make Nuremberg a lively town with a lot of atmosphere and flair.
