About

Since 2003 Dr. Clemens Fahrig has been Head Physician of the Clinic for Internal Medicine and Angiology at the Evangelisches Krankenhaus Hubertus, which he is also the Medical Director of. He is a specialist in internal medicine with a focus on angiology, Head of the Vascular Centre Berlin-Brandenburg, and the Seminar Leader of the German Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (DEGUM).

In his specialty area of Angiology Dr. Fahrig is concerned with functions and diseases of the vessels (arteries, veins, lymph vessels). These include degenerative diseases of the blood vessels, such as peripheral arterial occlusive disease (intermittent claudication), venous thrombosis (blood clot formation), varicose veins, carotid stenosis (narrowing of the vessels supplying the brain), and edema (tissue swelling) such as lymphedema. He also treats 'diabetic foot', a complication that arises in the course of diabetes mellitus. The clear goal of therapy for Dr. Fahrigs and his team is always avoiding amputation.

Diagnosis and treatment is based on experience and expertise in several disciplines. In this regard the Vascular Centre Berlin-Brandenburg is of particular assistance, in that angiologists, vascular surgeons, and radiologists work together on an interdisciplinary basis, ensuring the best care for the patient. The common treatment across professional disciplines spares the patient frequent changes of doctors, unnecessary duplication of tests, and long waits.

Most diagnostic options in angiology are non-invasive. The blood flow in the vessels is more precisely determined using vessel sonography (ultrasound examination) and/or phlebography (x-ray examination of the blood vessels with contrast agent). Wherever possible, the treatment is carried out with circulation-stimulating, vasodilating or anticoagulant medications, or via physically therapy, for instance with compressions. Only once these options have been exhausted will opening of the vessels be undertaken surgically.

In addition to good medical care at the Evangelisches Krankenhaus Hubertus, a versatile range of services is also available during the hospital stay. There is accommodation for accompanying persons in an apartment hotel on hospital grounds
