Information About the Field of Chin surgery

What is Chin Surgery?

A chin correction is a surgical procedure that changes the shape and/or size of the chin. Depending on your wishes, for example, rounding of edges can be carried out in women, or a more prominent chin can be achieved for men by inserting an implant. A chin correction is not a medical necessity and is included in aesthetic plastic surgeries.

For Who Comes Chin Surgery into Consideration?

Chin surgery is suitable for people who are dissatisfied with their chin and suffer self-esteem. The chin makes up a large part of the face, so an unusual size can make a face look non-proportionally and unattractive.

Often character traits are associated with the shape of the face so that after an improved appearance, people no longer face prejudices and stigmas. Women hope for a narrow soft chin to look feminine, while men usually want a sizeable prominent chin.

Before the treatment, the wishes should be determined in detail with the treating doctor. Besides, the doctor must clearly explain what results can be expected to prevent disappointment. Pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes mellitus must also be clarified, as well as smoking, as these factors can lead to wound healing disorders after the operation.

Which Chin Surgeries Are Available?

In principle, a distinction can be made between chin augmentation, chin reduction, and double chin correction.

Liposuction can be carried out to remove the double chin, which is caused by increased fat deposits between the mandible and neck. Particularly fine instruments are used for this, as this is a sensitive and exposed area.

Chin Reduction

Chin reduction is achieved by milling off the excessive bone. The surgery is usually carried out under general anesthesia and takes one to two hours. Self-dissolving sutures are typically used so that no stitches removal is necessary after the wound has healed. Even an inpatient stay afterward is not required. For the initial eight to ten days after the surgery, a dressing is worn to support the chin tissue. In the initial few days, it is recommended to eat only soft food in the form of soup or porridge to help the healing process of the jaw. Any desired food can be eaten at the latest fourteen days after the surgery.

Chin Plastic Surgery for Receding Chin

Two methods can achieve chin augmentation: One process involves the insertion of an artificial or autologous implant. Bone or cartilage from the pelvis, for example, can be used. In the second method, a piece of jaw-bone is sawn, moved forward, and screwed together. Access for these surgeries can usually be made through the inside of the mouth so that no visible scars are created. Only local anesthesia is required for the surgery, but it can certainly be carried under half-sleep or general anesthesia if the patient wishes. An inpatient stay afterward is not necessary. A support dressing is worn eight to ten days after the surgery, then the dressing and the stitches can be removed. At the latest, fourteen days postoperative, any desired food can be eaten.

Chin Correction Costs

Chin correction is almost always a purely aesthetic procedure without medical necessity, which means that statutory health insurance companies do not cover the bills of 3000-6000 Euros. The costs are calculated individually according to the complexity and are difficult to predict. In Germany, licensed physicians are not allowed to calculate services outside of the scope of statutory health care, but must adhere to the scale of fees for physicians.

Which Doctors And Clinics Are Specialists for Chin Correction?

Patients can obtain advice on their surgery requests directly from the surgeons in specialized clinics for plastic and aesthetic surgery. However, in some clinics, the consultation is already subject to a fee, regardless of whether a surgery is required afterward. Costs of 50-200€ may be incurred, depending on the length of the consultation.

The surgeriesfall within the area of plastic and aesthetic surgery specialists. Caution: the term "cosmetic surgery" is not defined in the law on further training for doctors and is therefore not protected.
