About

Professor Martin Kostelka is the Senior Consultant in Paediatric Surgery at the Leipzig Cardiac Centre. Excellent and attentive treatment at the highest level are combined with the most up to date equipment at the Leipzig Cardiac Centre. Around 1,000 children are treated here in our wards and over 3,000 are treated as out-patients. Here, individual treatment and confident management of our young patients and their parents have particular precedence.

Professor Kostelka is one of the leading and internationally renowned specialists in the field of paediatric surgery and he can look back on over 27 years of experience in the field. His international activity includes work in Prague and London, where he acquired comprehensive skills in the diagnosis and treatment of congenital cardiac defects at the Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery Clinic of the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London (UK). Overseas scholarships have also taken him to Harvard (USA) and to the Universities of San Francisco (USA) and Los Angeles (USA). You will find more detailed information on Professor Kostelka’s training, scholarships and his medical activities under the heading “Vita”.

Professor Martin Kostelka has been the Senior Consultant at the Cardiac Surgery Clinic and Department of Paediatric Surgery since 2000 and, here, too, there has been impressive development, since, according to objective data assessment, the Leipzig Cardiac Centre and its results in paediatric surgery are at the forefront in terms of treatment quality and survival rates.

In his professional career, Professor Kostelka has performed approximately 10,000 surgical cardiac procedures at all levels of difficulty to date, with impressive results. The survival rate is over 97 per cent and, in fact 99 per cent for children over one year old!

At the same time, the scope of Professor Kostelka’s medical expertise extends from non-invasive and invasive diagnostics, to the indication for necessary examinations and treatments, and second opinions, to comprehensive cardiac surgery for young and older patients with common or rare congenital cardiac defects.

Around 85 per cent of congenital cardiac defects consist of the following:

  • Ventricular septal defect
  • Atrial septal defect
  • Patent ductus arteriosus
  • Aortic isthmus stenosis
  • Pulmonary stenosis
  • Tetralogy of Fallot
  • Atrio-vetricular septal defect
  • Hypoplastic left heart syndrome
  • TGA
  • TAPVD
  • PTA

Thanks to his long-standing experience, Professor Kostelka performs all interventions for these congenital defects skilfully and reliably, and he also has great expertise in rare cardiac conditions.

Treatment emphasis at the Paediatric Cardiology Clinic at the Leipzig Cardiac Centre

The Leipzig Cardiac Centre is equipped for the diagnosis of and for procedures for cardiac defects. It also has a Paediatric Rhythmology Department, which is only provided in a few centres in the German-speaking region and which includes the complete range of non-invasive and invasive diagnostics for cardiac arrhythmias. These include such examinations as: electrocardiography, stress ECG, cardiac pacemaker and ICD programming, as well as a laboratory for electrophysiological examinations (EPU Laboratory).

In order to guarantee the best possible care, the Paediatric Cardiology and Paediatric Surgery Clinic at the Leipzig Cardiac Centre has its own Intensive Care Ward, with eight artificial respiration beds (including invasive monitoring, ECMO, etc.). An Intermediate Care Ward designed for children is also available for non-respirated patients. All beds in the general ward are also equipped with state of the art telemetric monitoring devices. Thus, details such as oxygen saturation can also be retrieved and monitored outside the patient’s room.

The outstanding treatment and care, as well as the high quality standards of the Paediatric Cardiology Clinic are also reflected in the quality seal, “Excellent – FOR CHILDREN”, which has been awarded to the Leipzig Cardiac Centre for a number of years. Good psychosocial care of the patients and their parents is ensured by experienced social workers, psychologists and a wide range of educational activities.

Accordingly, the motto of the paediatric surgery and paediatric cardiology team at the Leipzig Cardiac Centre is: “Treatment of childhood cardiac conditions and the care of patients with congenital cardiac defects from the foetus to the adult. Committed, kind, interdisciplinary and to the highest standard of medical knowledge.”

Treatment emphases of Professor Martin Kostelka

Professor Kostelka places particular value on close collaboration in a well-practised, interdisciplinary team consisting of paediatric surgeons, paediatric cardiologists, paediatric anaesthetist and paediatric HLM specialists. They attend each treatment closely, as well as prior to and following the required procedure.

In addition, Professor Kostelka can also give a second opinion concerning prenatally diagnosed cardiac conditions.
