About Univ.-Prof. Dr Marcus Hacker

Marcus Hacker is a University Professor at the Medical University of Vienna and head of the clinical department for nuclear medicine at the Vienna General Hospital (AKH). He and his team have many years of practical experience and state-of-the-art medical technology, enabling them to provide patients with the best possible nuclear medical care.

The clinical department for nuclear medicine at the Medical University of Vienna is one of the largest departments of its kind in Europe with over 90 employees, a therapy ward with 16 beds, state-of-the-art equipment, and a high-performance radiopharmaceutical department (equipped, among others, with a cyclotron).

Prof. Hacker and his colleagues form an experienced nuclear medical research and competence center. Nuclear medicine is a field of medicine where radioactive compounds (so-called "radiopharmaceuticals") are used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. With the help of these labeled drugs, the function of organs and tissues can be assessed, which leads to improved diagnostics and offers the possibility of using molecularly targeted therapies. Interdisciplinary cooperation is very strong in this field. There is close cooperation between physicians of different disciplines, radiology technologists, nursing staff, biomedical analytics, pharmacists, physicists, biologists, mechatronic engineers, and many others.

Nuclear Medicine Vienna even has its own cyclotron. In this latest-generation ring accelerator, the highly specific radiopharmaceuticals used in diagnostic procedures are produced individually for each patient. The radioactive substance emits only low levels of radiation - it is generally lower than in conventional X-rays. Besides, Nuclear Medicine Vienna uses substances that are only active for a short time and decompose after a few hours or days.

In the field of imaging diagnostics, all procedures of conventional nuclear medicine such as thyroid, skeletal, pulmonary, brain, and heart examinations, as well as inflammation diagnostics are offered using SPECT and SPECT/CT technology.

Besides, the department has PET/CT and PET/MR scanners, which are used in combination with a wide range of radiopharmaceuticals for individual and customized diagnostic and therapeutic concepts. In this context, the close cooperation with the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) and the numerous university hospitals is of decisive importance.

Nuclear medical therapies of thyroid, liver, prostate, or neuroendocrine tumors using beta and alpha emitters are another focus of the department.


An essential facet of the diagnostic and treatment spectrum of Nuclear Medicine Vienna is the broadly based scintigraphy outpatient clinic. Scintigraphy is one of the most common examination procedures in nuclear medicine. Scintigraphy can detect and visualize changes in the body's structures - tissue and bone. Due to their specific properties, radioactive substances allow meaningful diagnostics in numerous medical fields. One of the main focuses is diagnostics and therapy of the thyroid - which also plays an important role in Prof. Hacker's treatment.

Thyroid Scintigraphy - Makes Changes Visible

Thyroid scintigraphy provides information about various diseases of the thyroid gland - from hyperthyroidism to thyroid cancer. For the examination, the patient is administered a short-lived radioactive substance, which is then, depending on the cell structure, increasingly absorbed by the thyroid tissue or not absorbed at all. The stored substance emits gamma radiation, which is made visible by a special camera (gamma camera or scanner). The thyroid scintigraphy visualizes the zones of increased and decreased storage and allows precise conclusions about pathological changes in some regions of the thyroid.

Scintigraphy is used to examine changes such as nodules and enlargement of the thyroid gland in the thyroid outpatient clinic of Nuclear Medicine Vienna. The thyroid scintigraphy shows precise benign changes such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis or Graves' disease, but also thyroid carcinoma.

Prof. Hacker's Main Treatment Focuses

The experienced head of the Department of Nuclear Medicine Vienna has the highest level of professional skills in all areas of his area of expertise - in diagnostics and therapy. He has acquired particular expert knowledge in the fields of oncological, cardiovascular, and neuropsychiatric diseases.

Oncological diseases

Oncological diseases are at the top of the nuclear physician's agenda  - whether these are tumors of the liver and prostate, carcinomas of the thyroid gland, or neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas or intestine. Treatment aims to stop the growth of the tumor and reliably kill existing cancer cells. In radionuclide therapy, radioactive substances are applied to the body, which is then stored explicitly in the tumor cells and destroy them from inside. Healthy tissue is spared as far as possible and remains unaffected. This form of therapy is mainly used for thyroid cancer and bone metastases but is also suitable for other types of tumors in advanced stages.

Prof. Hacker also uses a particular form of this therapy to treat liver tumors: selective internal radionuclide therapy (SIRT), in which the radioactive substance is injected directly into the hepatic artery. In addition to the cancer cells, it also destroys the vessels that supply the tumor.

Cardiovascular Diseases

Examination with radioactive substances also plays an increasingly important role in cardiovascular diseases, especially in diagnostics. With examination methods such as SPECT/CT, a hybrid technique that combines two imaging techniques, all structures of the heart muscle and coronary arteries can be imaged with the utmost precision. This makes it easy to detect even the smallest changes that indicate an existing disease of the heart.

Neuropsychiatric Diseases

Neuropsychiatric diseases such as Alzheimer's or depression can also be reliably diagnosed with examination methods such as PET (positron emission tomography) in combination with CT or MRT. PET nuclear medical examinations are becoming more important due to the increase of this disease.
