Dr Robert Theiss is a specialist in endometriosis and endoscopic gynaecological operations. He is Director of the Centre for Endoscopy and Endometriosis at the Clinic for Gynaecology and Obstetrics at the Helios Clinic Munich West.
Specialising in endoscopic surgery, Dr Theiss concentrates on treating and operating on endometriosis lesions of various forms. With his many years of experience and using state-of-the-art science, he performs almost every gynaecological operation endoscopically.
Endometriosis Specialist in Munich
Endometriosis involves endometrium-like tissue outside the uterine cavity, which reacts sensitively to the hormonal cycle and, as dictated by the cycle, can cause pain in the lower abdomen and during female menstruation. Since endometriosis is the most common cause of secondary sterility, precise diagnostics and individually tailored therapy of the disease is the top priority for Dr Theiss and his team.
In order to determine a suitable therapy, an exact patient medical history must first be taken, followed by diagnosis of the localisation of the endometriosis. The diagnosis can be confirmed by the specialist using state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment, X-rays, palpation and MRI imaging.
Non-Surgical Treatment of Endometriosis
Dr Theiss and his team are not only the leading specialists in minimally invasive endoscopic therapy, they also offer a comprehensive range of non-surgical treatment options in cooperation with other physicians. Thus, peritoneal endometriosis can be treated hormonally, with long-term use of the pill, or homoeopathically, through traditional Chinese medicine or acupuncture.
Expert in Endoscopic Endometriosis Operations
If the non-surgical treatment measures are not effective or are contraindicated, there is the possibility of endoscopically removing the endometriosis lesions.
In this tissue-conserving procedure, only small abdominal incisions are made, via which a tube-like instrument (endoscope) with a camera lens is inserted. This lens then transmits the images from the abdominal cavity during the operation as a video image onto an HD screen. This allows the surgeon to remove the endometriosis lesions in a minimally invasive way, thereby protecting the tissue and ensuring low risk.
Fast Recovery Through Gentle Endoscopic Surgeries
Under the direction of Dr Theiss and his team, almost all gynaecological operations at Clinic West are performed endoscopically. Cysts can thus be removed while preserving the ovary, and myomas while preserving the uterus. Surgical clarification of sterility is also performed endoscopically. The possible problem, e.g. cysts or myomas, can thereby be treated directly during the operation. If it is necessary to remove the uterus (hysterectomy), this can also be performed much more gently using this technique, while preserving the cervix.
These minimally invasive procedures are planned and performed under general anaesthesia very routinely and with a lot of experience. The healing process is usually less painful, faster and involves fewer complications. After the operation, the patient's attending physicians provide comprehensive medical care and further therapy recommendations.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration – For Your Quick Recovery
Dr med. Robert Theiss established an interdisciplinary team of doctors in Munich in 2011. Highly qualified surgeons from other fields work closely together in the planning and execution of operations. You, as the patient, with your particular clinical picture of endometriosis, take centre stage and receive individual care. Thanks to this collaboration, you only have to undergo one operation, not several as in other clinics. For our operations, the gynaecological part is performed by Dr med. Robert Theiss, while involvement of the intestine and groin is operated on by Dr med. Michael Kramer, and involvement of the bladder or ureter by Dr med. Bernhard Liedl. The cumulative know-how of several experts means that you have the best possible surgical success.
Our Team of Doctors
Dr Robert Theiss is responsible for the planning and execution of this operation in our centre. The surgical aspect of the operations is undertaken by Dr med. Michael Kramer, Chief Physician at Viposa Munich. Dr med. Michael Kramer is a renowned specialist in endoscopic surgery and has already performed endoscopic intestinal resections for endometriosis patients during his time at the University Hospital of Tübingen. We perform about 25 intestinal resections per year. In the case of involvement of the bladder or ureter, Dr med. Bernhard Liedl is available to us, one of the most experienced urologists active in surgery in Germany.
