About

Charité Cardiology Centre, Berlin, the largest university hospital in Europe, provides a full range of established and modern methods of conservative, invasive and interventional cardiology and angiology services, specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of all cardiovascular diseases, at the Campus Charité Mitte, Campus Benjamin Franklin and Campus Virchow-Klinikum sites.

At the Campus Charité Mitte site Univ. Prof. Dr med. Gert Baumann has been the Head of the Medical Department, Division of Cardiology and Angiology since 1992. The clinical team led by Prof. Baumann offers its patients all round medical care, the organisational structure of which is second to none. The clinic treats the entire spectrum of cardiovascular and angiology diseases, focussing on catheter intervention procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the coronary arteries and cardiac arrhythmias.

In recent years, the clinic has gained special expertise in minimally invasive, catheter-based treatment of valvular heart disease (TAVI, MitraClip, atrial appendage closures). It is a national centre for these structural procedures and the in-house team of cardiac surgeons treats more than 400 patients with valvular heart disease with minimally invasive procedures each year. In addition to focussing on technical interventions, the hospital also specialises in the specific problems of heart disease in women.

In addition to clinical practice, Prof. Baumann and his team are also very involved in research . Throughout his career, he has been entrusted with the management of more than 50 clinical trials in the field of coronary heart disease and heart failure. He has led several BMFT (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) and DFG (German Research Foundation) funded research projects.

In all of this Prof. Baumann places great value on the understanding of the patient for his clinic, he has succeeded in preserving a personal patient-doctor relationship through the carefully thought-out structuring of the different areas.

At the Campus Benjamin Franklin site, Univ. Prof. Dr med. Ulf Landmesser has been the Head of the Medical Clinic of Cardiology since October 2014. Prof. Landmesser previously worked for seven years at the University Hospital in Zurich, where, in 2012, he was appointed deputy head of cardiology. Prof. Landmesser is an internationally renowned cardiologist and deputy editor of the leading European cardiology journal (European Heart Journal).

In his clinical work, Ulf Landmesser is an interventional cardiologist with a special interest in coronary interventions and modern methods of catheter-based heart valve therapy. In his research, Prof. Landmesser has, inter alia, dealt with HDL Cholesterol and its dysfunction in patients with cardiovascular risk factors, coronary heart disease or heart attacks. His highly regarded research has made it possible to assess the risks in patients more accurately and treat them in time. Prof. Landmesser's research aims at finding gentler cardiology procedures, so that new methods of preventive treatment will allow patients to be treated in a more effective and targeted manner. Stent operations, for example, are combined with other methods. In this way, the stent is not simply implanted, but the condition of the artery walls is accurately ascertained by means of optical coherence tomography and the stent or biological scaffold is accordingly more specifically placed. Furthermore, Prof. Landmesser has dealt intensively with new methods of catheter-based treatment for heart valve problems (including TAVI), and has worked, inter alia, at University College London as a visiting professor in this regard.

The clinic is located at the centre of the Campus Benjamin Franklin, and thus is optimally close to almost all departments. This means the working structure of the clinic team led by Prof. Landmesser is integrated in an interdisciplinary environment, enabling homogeneous, comprehensive, therapeutic and diagnostic care for patients. The range of services of the clinic includes functional laboratories, intensive care, invasive cardiology and angiology, hybrid catheter lab and provides emergency medical assistance, rhythmology and cardiac MRI.

The clinic has highly trained staff in every area to satisfy the needs of patients and ensure the best care for their conditions in both the outpatient and inpatient departments. The emphasis is not on luxurious comfort for the patient, but the vision of specialists is to cure diseases and relieve suffering at the highest possible level. For patients this means less effort towards making patients "feel at home", with the emphasis being on objectively recognising and treating the condition in the context of a serious and objective doctor-patient relationship.

At the Campus Virchow Clinic site, Univ. Prof. Dr med. Burkert Pieske has been the Head of the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, since 2014. The specialist in cardiovascular medicine was head of the Division of Cardiology at the Medical University of Graz in Austria, and Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Cardiovascular Research before being employed in Berlin. Prof. Pieske examines the causes of diastolic heart failure (restricted elasticity of the heart muscle), a common cause of heart failure. The aim is to identify key molecular mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases, in order to develop new therapeutic and preventive measures. In this regard, together with his Graz colleague, he has established a catheter-based heart valve surgical procedure (Tavistock method), which makes it possible to treat patients with aortic stenosis, who are inoperable. This novel method can be performed without splitting the breastbone and without cardiopulmonary bypass, since work can be performed with a beating heart. It has also played a decisive role in procedures in congenital heart disease (PFO closure intervention) and cardiac surgery after strokes (atrial appendage closure intervention) in patients who cannot tolerate drugs to reduce blood clotting.

With the employment of Prof. Pieske, the Charité Cardiology Unit has managed to bring an internationally recognised specialists to Germany. The clinical team led by the clinic director Prof. Pieske specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of all heart and circulatory diseases and thus can offer patients all the established and latest scientific therapies for the effective treatment of heart disease. As clinic director, Prof. Pieske cares for and values a personal way of working, which is clear from the mission statement of the clinic: A patient-oriented treatment can only succeed if the needs of individuals are recognised and integrated into treatment planning. Heart diseases in particular represent a sensitive area and are often accompanied by fears and worries in those affected. These fears often say something about the needs of individuals and can thus serve the physician as a clue to arriving at an optimal therapy solution. Even after a hospital stay, Prof. Pieske believes it is important that his patients be accompanied back to everyday life. Therefore, the clinic is a point of contact for post-operative treatments.
