Card

Dr. Munther Sabarini is a specialist in spine surgery and the director and founder of the Avicenna Clinic in Berlin. In addition, as a specialist in neurosurgery, he specializes in the microsurgical therapy of diseases in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.

Dr. Sabarini operates on diseases and spine injuries at the international Avicenna Clinic using state-of-the-art surgical techniques. The focus is on the patient as a person. After a detailed consultation, examinations, and diagnosis, the patient receives an individualized therapy program.

Renowned Spine Specialist in Berlin with Many Years of International Experience

Dr Munther Sabarini looks back on an international career that has taken him from his home country of Jordan to Berlin via various stays, such as in Bulgaria, the USA, and Great Britain. In the meantime, the world-renowned specialist in spine surgery has gained more than 30 years of professional experience and has treated more than 30,000 patients. International patients with spinal complaints can be helped by the director and his team at the Avicenna Clinic in Berlin with confidence and understanding in 13 languages.

Most Extraordinary Expertise in the Treatment of Herniated Discs (Cervical Spine/Lumbar Spine)

Since a herniated disc often regresses, its treatment can initially be conservative, depending on the discomfort. The focus is on pain-relieving drug therapy, which makes effective physiotherapy possible in the first place. In addition to the targeted exercise of the affected area in the spine, an injection of cortisone products may also be considered to reduce potential inflammation.

If unbearable and therapy-resistant pain persists, a neurological deficit such as tingling, numbness, or reduced strength has developed, or even bladder emptying and rectal function are disturbed, surgery is advisable to maintain quality of life. There are various procedures to choose from.

Increasingly, higher-grade herniated discs can also be operated on using microsurgery. This involves puncturing the skin over the area of discomfort with a cannula and removing the constricting disc tissue while preserving the disc's support function.

An endoscopic procedure using a tiny camera lens may also be chosen to remove the leaked, gelatinous disc nucleus that constricts the spinal cord in the spinal canal. For herniated discs in the cervical spine, in contrast to the lumbar spine, surgery is often necessary to prevent loss of strength or sensory disturbances in the limbs.

State-of-the-Art Diagnosis and Therapy for Spinal Stenosis

When the spinal canal that carries the spinal cord in the spine is narrowed, for example, by calcification or bony attachments, it is referred to as spinal stenosis. This manifests mainly as weakness and pain in the legs and the back. However, the upper limbs can also be affected. In addition, bladder emptying disorders or erection problems often occur.

After a detailed patient interview and an orienting physical examination, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirms the diagnosis. A functional image in the flexed and extended posture can also clarify vertebral slippage.

After a thorough examination, conservative therapy can be attempted. Often, however, surgery is recommended immediately upon diagnosis since hesitant waiting is not advisable when symptoms are clear, primarily when incontinence occurs. During surgery, the compressed nerves are freed from constricting structures such as calcifications and bone under general anesthesia. As a result, a significant improvement in symptoms is noticed by eight out of ten patients operated on.

Experienced Spine Surgeon: Therapy & Surgery for Spondylolisthesis and Vertebral Fracture

In principle, the physician diagnoses a stable or unstable vertebral fracture. However, due to the fixating properties of the intact ligaments, the spinal canal is not constricted in a stable fracture. Therefore, these fractures can heal completely without surgical intervention.

More complicated are unstable vertebral fractures, which are associated with spinal canal narrowing and, consequently, usually with functional neurological impairment. Therefore, stabilization of the spine by surgical fusion of individual segments may become necessary. In addition, injection of bone cement to stabilize the vertebral body may also be advisable.

After a slipped vertebra has been diagnosed, a stiffening procedure known as spinal fusion may be advisable to counteract further degeneration on the joint surfaces and prevent spinal canal narrowing.

Specialist for Back and Neck Pain in Berlin

One of the most common reasons for a doctor's appointment in Germany is undoubtedly back and neck pain. These complaints are not infrequently due to an unergonomic workplace or a general lack of exercise. Nevertheless, neck and back pain should be regarded as a symptom indicating severe spine diseases.

After a thorough diagnosis, including a patient interview, examination, and imaging, Dr Sabarini works out an individual therapy plan with his patients, which includes medicated measures and takes the workplace and muscular imbalances into account.

Cysts and Tumors of the Spine: Diagnosis and Treatment of Spinal Tumors

Unlike tumors, the growth of cysts in the spine is basically harmless. Nevertheless, they can also lead to entrapment of the spinal cord and exiting nerve roots. A reliable diagnosis is MRI. To eliminate the symptoms,  microsurgical decompression can be performed. In this procedure, the cyst is peeled out of the surrounding tissue through a three-centimeter-long skin incision and removed completely.

The therapy for tumor diseases of the spine is more complicated. In addition to metastases from other tumor localizations in the organism, the spinal cord membranes and the nerves can also be affected by excessive growth. Depending on the tumor diagnosis, microsurgery may also be used - especially for benign tumors. Malignant tumors or metastases require individualized cancer therapy, which is always carried out in close collegial cooperation with specialists from other disciplines.
